Quick - anyone else who's been watching/taping "Mann and Machine" on the
Sci-Fi Channel, wasn't that Lisa Ryder on those Puritan's Pride commercials??

They show that commercials tens of hundreds of times everyday (seems
like) and i've ignored it every single time. Just now, however, i turned
back to the TV, getting ready to unpause the VCR, and caught a glimpse of
a young blond woman smiling as she held up her very own bottle of
vitamins and i'm staking my ABBA albums that she was Lisa Ryder (okay,
empty bet. i don't have any ABBA albums yet. Oo, a rhyme.) Anyway, she
was as cute as Lisa Ryder :)

<sigh> Now i'm going to have to keep the TV on all night until i catch it
again... <g>

I got Yet Another one of those mailers from Columbia House Video. I'm a
member of their Next Generation series, having bought out the Classic Trek
series. They sent me a list of newish entrees to the series offerings, to
see what they could hook me on next.

I sent them a letter telling them that I'm not interested in any of the
series in the letter (they're also offering B&B, but it wasn't in this
particular mailing), but would they please remember me if they decide to
offer FK, preferably the Canadian version.

I figure it can't hurt to do an end run from another direction on this
thing, seeing as how I've already written letters to Kay and Jon.

And it felt nice to slip the letter into an envelope prepaid by Columbia
House. :-)

Oh, darn...there go my proposals to tailor new lists to every concievable
conversation that FK fans might choose to carry on, to wit:

FORKNIFE = Dedicated to FK fans who simply wanna talk about food on the show
FOREIGNI = Devoted exclusively to foreign-language versions of FK
FORWAR = Wherein nothing but endless warfare reigns
FORBYE = Created for fans who want to leave the list and insult everyone on the way
out because they are so much more superior than all of us.
FORPLAY = Fans who insist they want to talk about naughty things in general and
     on-screen butts in particular
FORSCORE = Fans who have lost touch with reality and imagine they have had long-
standing intimate relationships with cast and crew members, had their
children, and are planning retirement together in Sussex to raise bees.
FORQUEST = List members who are doing fanfic and need to throw out endless
research questions to fellow members, so they won't have to hit the
library or do their own research.
FORYKYBW = Fans who want to let us know absolutely every single thought they've
had even remotely relating to FK, while looking at a fire hydrant etc.
FURREVER = Fans of carouches and vampire doggies in particular
FORKNOTE = Discussions primarily about the music on the show, incidental or
     otherwise
FORTWEEN = Hot topic: The commercials between show segments.
FORLOCK = Deep conversation about how the characters' hair looks, this season

and so forth...

The Masai traditionally _do_ only subsist on the blood of their cattle -
and they are certainly "normal" humans.

Hiya.

I just posted this story to the FKFIC list (which nobody is allowed to read
until AFTER they've seen Human Factor) and when it came back from the list,
I realized for the first time just how looooooong it was... oops! Bad
assistant listowner! No fair committing sloppy list fiction! Must count
lines! I will henceforth relinquish my biscuit.

In accordance with list rules, I will NOT repost the story in sections. If
it got mangled on its way into your mailer, e-mail me and I will re-send in
sections. AFTER you have seen Human Factor.

Also in accordance with list rules, I am posting this on FORKNI, not FKFIC,
since the latter list is just for stories.

And in accordance with list etiquette, lessee, I gotta find an ObFK: Did
anyone else ever listen to "She Talks to Angels" by the Black Crowes and
kinda think it was a really cool Natalie song?

Hmm, let me see. Did I forget any list rules? <g>

I would like this to be true, too. Janette remarks that if
Serena's human lover is still alive, then they can't be having sex (as
well as that great "in my case... homicide" remark to Schanke), but we
also know that her control problem is so severe she's never been able to
successfully bring someone over. Nick might have an extra-bad control

gets aroused, he might lose every shred of control.

A few folks have posed the idea that Nick might have left mortal children
behind. And Kimby threw out the idea that Tracy find out she'd a decendant
of some deBrabant guy. I actually started a story after 1st season (and not
being a writer, it was a painful and short lived thing) where Nat was a
descendant of Nick's. Don't remember how I had this coming to light. It was
probably something LaCroix had kept track of and was using the info to
torment Nick over something. No, I never finished it, I have no idea what I
did with it, but if anyone wants to run with it, go for it. I don't remember
seeing the idea used anywhere, but I will be the first to admit, I can't
keep up with all the FK fiction out there.

Well, I guess old Nick de Brabant won't be reading this list
anytime soon, then... since over the intervening centuries he's clung to
his High Church Catholicism like--deep breath, all together now --lichen
to a stone. Didn't people comment on how raptly he stared at the
crucifix at the end of Sons of Belial (now out of spoiler protection,
Jamie, so don't smack me!)?

And in Fever, without giving any spoilers I can still say it
looks like Vachon, boychild of the Inquisition and resident of a
(presumably) deconsecrated church might fit that bill too.

What I would like to see in the last episode of the 3rd season?
1 LC with a hairpiece that covers that cute bald spot.
2 Nick and Nat finally get it on, preferably on his kitchen table.( hey the
postman "does" ring twice!)
3 Vachon has it with Tracys whining and takes care of her, for good. Then he
goes to a hair salon.
4 Captain Reese gets his own &$@# water cooler.
5 They finish remodeling the squad room.
6 Schanke shows up at Nicks door looking frazzled in torn clothes and very
peeved about the late Tracy Vetter (see above) taking his job.
As for the discussion about Vampires prefering Human blood I think it's a
metaphysical thing. The taking of not just life but the soul of the victim.
Human blood for a vampire may indeed have some intangible ingredient they
crave. Or they just like killing people. Cows are slow, ugly and smelly. :)
Now I need to get on the soapbox about a social/gender pet peeve of mine. I
couldn't help noticing all the folks, 90% women, APOLOGIZING for this and
that other post. This bothers me to no end, You apologize for an offense, say

Hmm, I do remember learning about this in school at some point. But they
also drink milk (curdled milk, and you *don't* want to know how they
curdle it) to round out their diet.

And I think vampires cry blood and sweat blood because it makes a Compelling

Here's a discussion topic that Sandra Gray and I have been pondering,
we thought you all might like to add your 2 pints worth.

When they bite the neck, how the heck do they judge it so they
don't hit the carotid? It would be a damn fine mess or you'd have to
have a suction mouth to keep that pressure under check. It always
seems that the blood just oozes out. I doubt being bitten in that area
would be the case.

Discussion anyone?

to primetime with blood soaked vampires and vicitims. I had enough of a

LC does sometimes get a bit running out the side, he uses his finger in a

About them not hiting the carotid maybe it's something like instinct that
they have. You know like how big cats grab the prey in their mouths and crush
the neck. My opinion about the teeth now this may seem crazy, but I always
thought that the vampire fangs kind of have this suction action so when they
bite into something or someone it goes up like the suction hooks the dentists
stick in your mouth.

Anyone agree with me on this or am I way off course?

I just went on digest because of so many posts and having to study so
I am a little behind, please forgive anything which may have already been
said.
Just a few points about what you have been discussing.

 - Nick wanting to be mortal or not. Speaking as someone who has a few
demons in her life I would say that although he may thing he wants to be
mortal he would be disappointed after a short time. He would begin to
realize that no matter how much he hated the so called evil things about
being a vampire, those are the thing which made him the type of person
Nat and Jannette love him so much for. (hope that makes sense)

 - Why is human blood so enticing for vampires? Possibly the endorphine
released in the bloodstream during the moments of fear at the realization
that you are probably going to die, and those released during sexual
arousal. My thought is that being bitten is almost as sexual for the
victim as biting is for the vampire. Just look at the faces of the person
being bitten and you can probably see where I am coming from. Although
animals feel fear and sexual arousal to some extent, the endorphines
aren't the same as those of humans.

 - Dangers of vampire/mortal sex. Maybe the danger of being bitten by a
vampire during sex has something to do with position during the act. Let
your mind wander into those slightly kninky regions and tell me if you
agree or not.

BTW, I am no longer webless but I am still webstupid so bear with me
during my mistakes. Could someone please e-mail me off list with the
location of the previous wars so I can prepare? I think I may have to
declare that I am a closet Merc. I have a fridge magnet that says "I
will=FE for CHOCOLATE" and that covers most things.

Maybe Nick and Tracy ride around Toronto reading license plates?

This is rather tangenatal to Nancy's post, but last quarter as I was
studying for my finals, I came across a very interesting quote in a book on
Louis XIV. Louis was trying to claim the throne of Spain (and Spain's
holdings, which at that time included the Southern Netherlands, part of
modern day Belgium) for his son through the right of Louis' wife, the
daughter of the Spanish king. I don't have the text with me, but the
scholar mentioned that Louis' lawyers resurrected a medieval practive in
Brabant of any and all land and possessions belonging solely to the
children of the first marriage. Now, if Nick was the son of the ruling
family (and presumably with the "de Brabant" designation, he was--everyone
else would have used "de--specific place of birth"), it is likely that he
would have been given land (and, although I do not know specifically about
Brabant, with Burgandy to the south and Holland to the north, it was most
likely wealthy). But, if he was the son of his father's second marriage,
and therefore could not inherit, it would explain why he was an itnerant
knight selling his sword (although I've *yet* to figure out what he would
be doing in Wales!!!)

Jeez, I can ramble *really* well!

Subject: Re: mortal sex

Um. . .as for the vampire "sex-bite" reflex, even completely mortal lovers
often experience the urge to. . .ah. . .suck or *nip* on various parts of
each other's anatomy during sexual excitement. This includes rather
prominently the neck. . .witness the prevalence of the "hickey." Hope this
doesn't overly violate PG-13 standards. Maybe our vamps just take this
normal human tendency a *little* too far. In that regard--I agree with
Sandra when she points out that the danger of this is a good reason Nick
can't let himself get too close to Nat. I remember him telling her not to
try to get too close to him because he *is* dangerous. And for those who
wish he'd be more affectionate--wouldn't it be rather cruel of him to
encourage her feelings overmuch in view of his own awareness of how much
this would ultimately harm her? I guess I don't see his distancing himself
from her as insensitivity or lack of caring but rather the opposite. I
view it as terrific self-restraint, self-sacrifice, and love on his part to
refrain from openly declaring to her how much he loves her. I think, for
her own sake, he often wants to push her away from him, and that if he
*didn't* love her he wouldn't fight his own desires so much. Sigh. . .but
then, I've always been a sucker for the "I'm not good enough for you" line,
and am quite willing to see it as noble self-denial rather than fear of
commitment, etc.

(or something; lost the original title to the sands of time <G>):

Sorry listfolk, I didn't mean to snap. I just didn't think a debate on how
much it is valid to discuss the effect of formative religious experience of
fictional once-mortal characters on their vampire incarnations, needed a
paragraph added at the end with the inference (as I read it to say) "well,
this isn't really anything we'll have to worry about because there won't be
anyone religious enough to object on this list anyway." On second
reflection, I'm sure that Leah didn't mean to imply anything of the kind.

Yes, the article appeared in their special NATPE mid-week edition. I don't
think it will appear on newstands since it was specifically focused on
NATPE. The NATPE gang only picked up a few copies at the beginning of the
day it was distributed since we wanted to make sure the participants saw it
and by the end of the day they were out! (Good sign it got to a lot of
people, but not so good for souvenir collecting.)

I would suggest writing Electronic Media for an issue -- "Electronic Media,
Crain Communications, [Address removed]" If they get
inundated with requests for that issue due to the FK article maybe they'll
feel motivated to write about the show again??? (Just my little fantasy...)

Mary Farrell wrote a wonderful short-short called "No Excuse For Not

fiction website and/or the ftp site.

Several listmembers wrote a story after a really *good* party (I really
don't remember whom as I wasn't there) in which Nick actually does get
himself defanged for Natalie's sake. I can't remember the title. Does
anyone know?

A nurse friend of mine wonders the same thing. As Allison Percy says of
vampires crying tears, I think the neck-biting thing is a CDD (compelling
dramatic device!). :) It's a sensual place to bite someone. There are, of
course, more sensual places to bite someone, but it's usually not anything
you can show on TV. ;) Maybe vampires have to go through training...
