(a sighting) Quick - anyone else who's been watching/taping "Mann and Machine" on the Sci-Fi Channel, wasn't that Lisa Ryder on those Puritan's Pride commercials?? They show that commercials tens of hundreds of times everyday (seems like) and i've ignored it every single time. Just now, however, i turned back to the TV, getting ready to unpause the VCR, and caught a glimpse of a young blond woman smiling as she held up her very own bottle of vitamins and i'm staking my ABBA albums that she was Lisa Ryder (okay, empty bet. i don't have any ABBA albums yet. Oo, a rhyme.) Anyway, she was as cute as Lisa Ryder :) <sigh> Now i'm going to have to keep the TV on all night until i catch it again... <g> [Name removed by request] How can you trust someone who bleeds for seven days and doesn't die? - BGW ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 8 Feb 1996 22:40:00 EST From: Deb Hisle <sysdeb@i.......> Subject: SOS: Another prepaid letter I got Yet Another one of those mailers from Columbia House Video. Just a few points about what you have been discussing. - Nick wanting to be mortal or not. Speaking as someone who has a few demons in her life I would say that although he may thing he wants to be mortal he would be disappointed after a short time. He would begin to realize that no matter how much he hated the so called evil things about being a vampire, those are the thing which made him the type of person Nat and Jannette love him so much for. (hope that makes sense) - Why is human blood so enticing for vampires? Possibly the endorphine released in the bloodstream during the moments of fear at the realization that you are probably going to die, and those released during sexual arousal. My thought is that being bitten is almost as sexual for the victim as biting is for the vampire. Just look at the faces of the person being bitten and you can probably see where I am coming from. Although animals feel fear and sexual arousal to some extent, the endorphines aren't the same as those of humans. - Dangers of vampire/mortal sex. Maybe the danger of being bitten by a vampire during sex has something to do with position during the act. Let your mind wander into those slightly kninky regions and tell me if you agree or not. BTW, I am no longer webless but I am still webstupid so bear with me during my mistakes. Could someone please e-mail me off list with the location of the previous wars so I can prepare? This is rather tangenatal to Nancy's post, but last quarter as I was studying for my finals, I came across a very interesting quote in a book on Louis XIV. Louis was trying to claim the throne of Spain (and Spain's holdings, which at that time included the Southern Netherlands, part of modern day Belgium) for his son through the right of Louis' wife, the daughter of the Spanish king. I don't have the text with me, but the scholar mentioned that Louis' lawyers resurrected a medieval practive in Brabant of any and all land and possessions belonging solely to the children of the first marriage. Now, if Nick was the son of the ruling family (and presumably with the "de Brabant" designation, he was--everyone else would have used "de--specific place of birth"), it is likely that he would have been given land (and, although I do not know specifically about Brabant, with Burgandy to the south and Holland to the north, it was most likely wealthy). But, if he was the son of his father's second marriage, and therefore could not inherit, it would explain why he was an itnerant knight selling his sword (although I've *yet* to figure out what he would be doing in Wales!!!) I remember him telling her not to try to get too close to him because he *is* dangerous. And for those who wish he'd be more affectionate--wouldn't it be rather cruel of him to encourage her feelings overmuch in view of his own awareness of how much this would ultimately harm her? I guess I don't see his distancing himself from her as insensitivity or lack of caring but rather the opposite. I view it as terrific self-restraint, self-sacrifice, and love on his part to refrain from openly declaring to her how much he loves her. I think, for her own sake, he often wants to push her away from him, and that if he *didn't* love her he wouldn't fight his own desires so much. I just didn't think a debate on how much it is valid to discuss the effect of formative religious experience of fictional once-mortal characters on their vampire incarnations, needed a paragraph added at the end with the inference (as I read it to say) "well, this isn't really anything we'll have to worry about because there won't be anyone religious enough to object on this list anyway." On second reflection, I'm sure that Leah didn't mean to imply anything of the kind. Warm fuzzies all around, guys? Felicia Bollin AriCon@a....... I don't think it will appear on newstands since it was specifically focused on NATPE. The NATPE gang only picked up a few copies at the beginning of the day it was distributed since we wanted to make sure the participants saw it and by the end of the day they were out! (Good sign it got to a lot of people, but not so good for souvenir collecting.) I would suggest writing Electronic Media for an issue -- "Electronic Media, Crain Communications, [Address removed]" If they get inundated with requests for that issue due to the FK article maybe they'll feel motivated to write about the show again??? It's in Forever Net 1 and was nominated for a Fan Q award last year. I presume it's on the fiction website and/or the ftp site. Several listmembers wrote a story after a really *good* party (I really don't remember whom as I wasn't there) in which Nick actually does get himself defanged for Natalie's sake. I can't remember the title. Does anyone know? Cousin Lisa -- "That will be trouble." As Allison Percy says of vampires crying tears, I think the neck-biting thing is a CDD (compelling dramatic device!). :) It's a sensual place to bite someone. There are, of course, more sensual places to bite someone, but it's usually not anything you can show on TV. ;) Maybe vampires have to go through training... "Vampirism 101" or something. I can see Uncle as teacher. "Now, children, *this* is the jugular, and *this* is the carotid.
