So many good answers, I don't know what to do, but I am pretty much
in Vampire heaven right now, if that is possible. Loved the answers.

Subject: Ooops, So there's more than 10 Actors; Season 1 Tapes

I goofed as I imagine someone has already pointed out (I've changed to
digest). The actress in Timeless is *not* the same as the one in Bad Blood.
My bad. Sorry.

------------
I've kept my mouth shut about the Tapes thing, but with the recent
hullaballoo I'm gonna' share my whiney story.

I made a deal less than a year ago to trade tapes of FK for tapes of HL. I
had never seen Season 1 FK and the person with whom I traded sent me 8
EP-speed (6 hour mode) tapes with Season 1 in USA and Canadian versions,
plus NB's cereal commercials, movies with our heroes in them, etc. I sent 8
SP-speed (2 hour mode, 3 eps per tape) tapes with copies of the Season 1
commercial tapes I had bought from HL.

I know the person worked hard copying all that stuff, but the net result was
that it was all unwatchable. I tried everything to watch those videos. I
had my VCR serviced and I worked with the adjustments on the tv and stereo.
I was never able to get the videos to a point where I could watch them.
Now, I've swapped videos before - I got the second season of HL that way -
and the quality wasn't great. But, it was watchable.

I really felt bad about saying something about it, but I also really wanted
to see the episodes, so finally I e-mailed the person. The person
(obviously I'm not gonna' reveal anything about them) said they would redo
them in SP mode for me during the Christmas holidays. I've not heard from them.

I have begged Jon Felthemimer to give me the opportunity to give him money
;-) for merchandise such as the videos. I've offered the HL GWD cards to
anyone who will be so kind as to make watchable copies for me. I've been on
and off the list now for at least seven months; I love the show and I'm
doing everything my limited time, energy and money will allow to get a
fourth season - but, unlike the promise that someone made (I'm sorry, I
forgot who) that eventually those of us who want Season 1 will get it, I've
not gotten it.  Given, I'm an impatient pup - so maybe this is unwarranted;
but I'm going bonkers y'know!

Of course, I'm also willing to pay to get them (though probably not $150).

WHY doesn't he say what he really feels then? He is just playing with
here emotions, which is why I say he is selfish.
There are some people in life who just aren't happy unless theres a
problem and to me, Nick is one of them. Yes, Natalie gives him tremendous
support and what does she get in return? This man loves to angst,he turns
away the woman that we all believe he loves and I swear he does it
because he doesn't know how to survive unless there is misery in his life.
He reminds me of a mixture of a little boy looking for attention and an
alcoholic and Nat is his dependent. As I said before, maybe she doesn't
want commitment and this guy is perfect for her,she can set all her
feelings aside because after all "he's a vampire" Why hasn't she been
more active in finding a cure? I'm not good at episode titles, but why
didn't they pursue the angle of the "Sybil" vampire, the one with the
multiple personalities? Why in "Blackwing" when it appeared that Nick had
successfully "slept" with the Indian woman, didn't he rush right over to
Nat's? Did he even give her a second thought? Maybe, just maybe there was
more truth in his little speech in BMV than we think.
Maybe I'm just a die-hard romantic and I just don't see the spark in
their relationship, she might as well be his sister.
He constantly seems to "fall off the blood wagon" and theres good ole
Nat ready at his side, maybe she should be sent a lesson in "tough love".
By her willingness to stand by him,as admirable as it may seem, she is
only harming him. Until Nick finds the "good" in himself,he is of no good
use to anyone, but I think that the "good" will never be *good* enough for
him!

I do agree that the character development is the way that it is for the
structure and continuity of the show,my thoughts are much like
fan-fic,how I would like it to be,by making the characters more 3
dimensional in this genre. No personal attacks intended or implied.
All in good fun :)

Here it is:

The Nat-CERK Challenge

Write a story in which Nat calls CERK while the Nightcrawler is on the

Subject: Beasts, Discussions, Lurkers, & Nat

And yes, I DO write out my subjects so I remember what I was going to talk
about. So it's long. Prepare yourself. And thanks to new Wicked Cousin
Tippi and Cassie Carter for jumpstarting this particular diversion.
(Although, I'm not sure I agreed with much that either of you said... :))

* Beasts Within, Take 27 * Yes, they exist. This is one of those very
personal, under-your-skin evaluations that everyone has a different take
on. No shame there. My personal beasts are the things about myself I
dislike, and would like to control; this is where I feel a certain sympathy
for Nick, though his beasts - bloodlust, despair, rage - are a lot worse
than mine (from a standpoint of how hard they are to control.)

I'm not talking about sneakiness, competetiveness, arrogance, or the wish
to follow one's desires here guys; these are aspects of one's self that any
Merc will 'celebrate', as the Cousins do. :) I'm talking about the
cruelty, insensitivity, or selfishness that make it impossible for me to
like Lacroix - and want to smack Nick when he's in a bitter mood. He can be
downright nasty when he's depressed.

It's all very well to say that a happy well-adjusted vamp kills and doesn't
regret it. I have to disagree. Any time you cause *pain* real pain, and
say it doesn't matter... well, in my book, that makes you sub-human. :) Not
a next step up on the evolutionary ladder. Yeah, that applies to animals
too! and yeah, that makes me a hypocrite for having a burger for lunch. I'm
working on it, allright?

And no, that doesn't mean I think all vamps are inherently evil, either. In
the wonderful modern Toronto we're dealing with, survival by killing is no
longer necessary. Yes, the urge to kill, to drink blood is very strong---
and I'm not passing judgement on that. Intent counts for a lot, I think...
again, personal feelings here. I can't really cite the chapter and verse
where this was laid down. Maybe the best these guys can hope for is not to
hurt too many people. But to say they can't help it, they're made to
kill... I can't admire it. Only feel sorry for it.

But then, this could just be my control-freak nature not wanting *anything*
to have dominion over me. Lacroix deals with this aspect of his vampirism
by glorying in it and saying it's his choice, but tell me, if he had a
reason to---do you really think he could quit?? (Ducking the Cousins... ah,
well...)

I guess I agree with the Dark Knighties who want Nick to stay a vampire but
be redeemed. I'm not sure how well he'd adjust to mortality at this point
either; but he's *not happy*, and killing again, and drinking human blood,
doesn't seem to help him come to any kind of peace in the long run.

* Discussing and Thinking and Writing....* Hmmm.. Strange. Unless inspired,
I feel pretty silly discussing serious aspects of FK that have already
aired. Except for the very new, "wow, that was a neat bit" comments that I
send to SPOILR, I'm usually certain no one wants my opinion!! :) (So you ca
n say that the above paragraphs are an aberration)

So, Cassie & Tippi and other newbies who were wondering why only silly
stuff gets a lot of air time, part of it is that yeah, we've talked about
this before. A lot. I only got on the list in October, and I've already
witnessed three rounds in the ongoing "Lacroix is Scum/Lacroix is Cool"
debate. Not that I'm sick of the topic.

I take my theories to e-mail, and fanfic. Lots of fanfic. Evolving fanfic.
Comments on fanfic to other authors. Dreaming up new fanfic.

Which brings up another aspect of this---I want to see more fanfic
discussion, and there's barely any. Is this because people are afraid of
(a) insulting the authors, (b) boring the rest of the list, or (c) spoiling
it for those who haven't read it yet?

^^^Whatever the reason, here's my $0.02 for the new guys to the list: Read
anything Susan Garrett has written. ANYTHING. Get copies of FOREVER NET
from Valery King, since a lot of the earlier issues pre-date the ftp site.
Go to the ftp, and download JMR's "When Life Gives You Lemons..." if you
miss Schanke. Check out Dianne de Sha's Maureen stories, Apache/Laura's
Vachon & Tracy stories, and the currently ongoing "THE GIFT" by Jayel. You
won't regret any of the time spent on this stuff.^^^

Okay, so that was more than two cents. You caught me in a generous mood.

* Nat. Getting Her a Life for Valentine's Day. *
Lots of people have been complaining/defending Natalie lately. Lots
of people have been putting up excellent, terrific posts on why she is how
she is, what she ought to do about it, and whether she's sane, happy, or
smart. This is great stuff.

Please write this in fanfic!!! Please, I'm begging. I'm working on
my own story for this, but I love other people's stuff so much---
---and if you really DO have a great idea for how Nat Should Get a
Life, do like my old editor said : "Show it, don't tell it!"

Okay. End of really long post.

I love this list because it is tolerant, silly, serious, creative,
informative, imaginative, and inspiring. And oh yeah, it's about Forever
Knight. It's a good TV show. Check it out. :)

This is from someone who has been there. You get yourself into these
relationships with the best intentions. Nat probably never intended to fall
for Nick, but a lot of us fall for people we never intend to; I fell for a
guy who was in every way *not* what I wanted, but he ended up being all that
I truly wanted without me realizing it. But for him, I was *there* for him,
a shoulder to cry on, support, comfort, when HE needed it. But a
relationship? -- whoa! Say those words even if you mean "friendship" and
chairs start to fly.

We all bring things into a relationship and we all take things with us when
we leave. What has Nick brought to his relationship with Nat? He has lived
800 years and has been with a lot of women. Does he know yet what he wants
out of a relationship? It doesn't seem like it. It doesn't seem like he
has learned 800 years worth of lessons from his love experiences. He's even
still unsure how he feels about LaCroix (and they have more in common).

What about Nat? She has lost so many people that she has loved (e.g., her
brother, friends, parents, etc.) and she has been hurt by people she has
loved (e.g., her Nana). Here she is confronted with someone who has the
potential to hurt her, someone who wants to die (the end result of gaining
mortality). She wants that "perfect love," but I think she is starting to
doubt its existance. Nat is always there for Nick -- she "nags" him but
it's out of frustration. She gives so much and wants to give more, but so
often her efforts and feelings are ignored by Nick.

I see two options for Nick and Nat (the two that I have experienced)-- Nick
wakes up and realizes that life isn't all about him, that his actions and
emotions effect others both positively and negatively, and that living means
caring about others and letting them care about him. -OR- Nat realizes that
no matter what happens, Nick will always care more about himself than he
does about anyone else, that he is an emotional vampire as well as a
physical one. And she will leave and start living *her* life.

Just my opinion from my perspective. Gee, that was kind of depressing.
Sorry. Such is life in the orphanage. Perhaps all of you people out there
still wearing rose-tinted glasses can offer a more uplifting view.

A question -- Since Nick Gray's request that we cool it on the goodies is
based on a fear it will be a distraction to finishing the tightly scheduled
filming, how about we save the stuff up & send it at the very end of
filming for the season??(And ask him when that is?) Or perhaps ask _him_
for suggestions for how we *can* recognize & support the cast & crew without
disrupting their work. I don't like the blanket "no more stuff" as much as
anyone, but I *do* see the need to be respectful of the producer's wishes
Maybe there are some alternatives that would meet both needs? Laurie are

Not to disagree, but maybe if we could keep the fantasies to their

 Hi Tippi!

Actually, I'm familiar with the moth example you gave here, and I believe
you forgot a detail or two. To begin with, the change occured within a small
space of time, evolutionarily speaking, but it did take more than one
generation. Also, the moths didn't just spontaneously decide to have black
offspring. The environmental conditions had changed to make the lighter
colored moths easy targets for predators and those moths who were more
darkly colored (due to a recessive gene) were suddenly more likely to
survive to pass their genes on to the next generation. The darker the moth,
the greater the chance for survival, mating and breeding. ( and I believe I
now owe a thank-you note to Mr. Clark, my old high school Field Biology
teacher! :-)

Then again, there are people declared geniuses at the age of five and

Of course, if you put a human and a hyena in a room together, only one of
them is going to walk out alive (and full, I might add). Does this put the
*hyena* on an evolutionary rung above humans?

Leah,
As a college prof. I have many letters behind my name--I do not truck
them out. Why, because,oh no! ego in gear, one should do one's own
talking. Impress folks with the force of one's convictions and
intellect, not with the alpha soup.
BTW, to whomever you are, the brighter the mind the greater the need for
play. Do not worry, one day you will see the essential truth of this
concept.

Take it as you will, but what I meant was fighting the good fight means
sacrifices (time, money, resources, etc., and in some cases life). I did
not say suicide was honorable, but death does come to us all. As you said
"one should use every weapon that one has and take every opportunity," but
where is the urgency if one is destined to live forever?

This is so darned interesting to me that I must carefully restrain myself
from responding. I started and carried through a thread on an FK
newsgroup on this very subject a few months ago, but I still want to know
what others think.

Basically, I agree with Lisa, but I still don't know *why* I agree. The
newsgroup discussion sort of identified Nat's attraction as the attraction
mortal humans tend to feel toward "romantic heroes/antiheroes"--like,
well, Rochester in *Jane Eyre*. Please, I want to know what you folks on
the list have to say on this subject--and I'm sure it won't be exactly the
same as the responses I got on the newsgroup!

Um... guys? Baby listowner here. Please try to remember that you can only
quote *four lines or less* of whatever post you're replying to. If you're
answering more than one point in a post, you can quote an additional four
lines for each point, if you need to. But huge blocks of requoted text
waste bandwidth -- and cost money to people who pay by the word.

Okay? Thanks. Warm fuzzies.

Stuff:

On a personal (NON-asst. listowner) note: Silliness is part of life, on a
good day. It is also an inherent part of FK, and what makes this list into
a community. There are days like today, when I'm facing the worst -- and
then I read my e-mail, and things seem a whole lot brighter. Maybe for the
rest of the world it's an information superhighway, but here on the FORKNI
lists, it's a cozy country road, where you can sit on someone's front porch
with all your pals and giggle over glasses of Ribena. The ideal mix, imo,
is when serious dissertations on characters and behaviour live side-by-side
with happy nonsense; the best of both worlds, and anyone is of course free
to exercise the veto power of their delete key at any time.

But Torrey -- I loved your post -- but I wish you'd explained a little more
clearly about "Jamie and her fly". It sounds really weird if you don't
know the story... <g>

I was not aware that there is a site for fanfic discussion; the
FKFIC list is for the fiction itself, isn't it? The spoiler list is for the
new shows and the regular list is for Forever Knight discussion. I always
thought comments must go to the authors directly?

I don't think vampires are the next *step* in human evolution -- I mean, if
we all became vampires what would we eat?? (Although, with all the 'youth
serums' scientists are trying to develop, heck who knows?) I *did* say they
were an *advance* over us -- as would anything stronger, smarter, and
longer-lived than us.

As for them being a more primative version... Well, I wouldn't mind buying
into that if it meant seeing a few fur-lined loincloths! Uncle's would, of
course, be an Armani or other elegantly fashioned, black, mandarin-collar
loincloth (yeah, yeah, I know, loincloths don't have collars). Hubba hubba!

Subject: The Nick-Nat question

I have to pretty much agree with Sharon Scott on this one, that Nick and
Nat need to start communicating, but I also think that the attitude of the
producers toward this situation is one of the biggest problems the series
has going for it. Remember, in second season TPTB tried to just drop the
Nick-Nat relationship without addressing it, giving it any thought, or
anything like that. That was a mistake, IMO because it significantly threw
the balance of the series off. There was a lot of exploration of Janette
and the Nick-Janette relationship, but that wasn't countered in *any* way,
romantic or otherwise, with the Nick-Nat relationship and the whole series
just got sort of lop-sided.

Then they did that dreadful BMV (an episode I *still* hate with a passion
even if the Nat-LC scene was brilliant), and then forgot about it again.
One of the reasons why I think first season worked so well is because the
character relationships were very balanced--there was a Nick-Nat-Janette
triangle that had an even amount of tension in it. That got lost in second
season.

So the real problem here is that TPTB don't know quite what to do with the
Nick-Nat relationship (hell, they can't for the life of them figure out
what to do with *Natalie*), and I think they're sorry they ever introduced
it in the first place because it restricts Nick's ability to go with the
neck of the week. So now they give it a little push every once in a while,
then leave it alone and miss a lot of other, *better* opportunities with
it.

For instance, *why* has the danger to Natalie in a relationship like this
*never* been addressed? How about a scene where he vamps out when he
kisses her. I can't believe we're 2.5 seasons into the thing, there is a
relationship between them, and this has never been addressed. Missed
opportunity. How about the aging quiestion? I can think of others, I'm
sure. And it stems from the philosophy of the series which is that while
the Nick-Nat thing is good to superficially address during sweeps weeks,
they'd rather it wasn't there at all and that ultimately hurts both the
characters and makes them look cold, selfish and uncommunicative.

Of course, part of our job is to work within these restrictions. Nick and
Nat *don't* communicate, and that's a two-sided thing there. I think
they've been a bit better this season, but they've got a long way to go.
I'd also like to see Natalie decide she can't put her life on hold for
him--Nick cares about her, but I don't really believe he loves her (I think
he sort of fancies he's in love with her because she's his current
representation of mortality). I'd like to see one pin the other down for a
serious discussion. But that's only going to happen in fanfic, and most of
us know it. So we're left with a frustrating, superficial Nick-Nat
relationship that should and could be *so* much more than TPTB are giving
us. The sad thing is, it's there in a lot of the other relationships, just
not in this one. There was good development of Nick-Janette, Nick-Schanke,
Schanke-Janette last season. So what's the problem with Natalie (though
the Nat-LC scenes, as few and far between as they are, are very nicely done
and there is a progression to them)?
