Subject: More lists/silly stuff

I'm fairly new to the list and I also don't have time to read every
post, but guess what? I don't. If it doesn't interest me, I skip it.
Sometimes I want to read the silly stuff, sometimes the serious
discussions, sometimes both and, to be honest, sometimes neither. And
the beauty of one list is that I can do just that. Apart from anything
else, if we keep adding more lists, how on earth will everyone keep
straight which list they should be replying to?

Hi,
As a favor to me, when you post about your TV station, please tell us
where its at,not just a channel number. And if you have the address, phone
number or contact person.

Each night when I go through the list I take out any posts where
someone has posted a cry for help or a cheer of praise and pass this on
to the people who are not on this list, just as others are doing. Ken888888
has been keeping the Compuserve people updated and Susan has been doing
that over on GEnie and Laura on Prodigy. We attempt to reach as many
people as possible, the more that know, the better off we are! We also have
a snail mail loop and another mailing that goes out.

   Thanks!

Absolutely.

However, I also think that Nick is suffering from the "Grass is Greener on
the Other Side" syndrome.

We don't really know why Nick chose to become a vampire. There had to be
more to his decision than just a yen to get into Janette's drawers. IMHO,
at least part of his decision was from a desire to be immortal, to be
powerful, to be stronger than mere mortals.

Okay, so after a few hundred years of happy vampire-hood, Nick begins to
realize what he lost by becoming a vampire: having children, romping in the
sunlight, his soul, etc. All of a sudden, being mortal doesn't seem so bad
after all.

And if he and Nat accomplish the impossible, and Nick regains his mortality,
I do not believe that he will be happy for more than a few years.
Eventually, Nick will tire of being mortal, the glow of being able to walk
in the sunshine will start to dim, and he'll begin to long for the old days
when he could fly through the air, hypnotize most people into doing what he
wanted, go anywhere and do anything just because he was a vampire. All of a
sudden, being a vampire doesn't seem so bad after all.

None of which means I don't think that Nick wants to redeem his soul. I
believe that Nick craves the thought of forgiveness for his "evil" ways. I
just think that there's more to his desire to be mortal than just a need for
redemption.

Well, you did say you wanted to talk about other things, so I'm
coming off basically lurk mode to add my VHO to this thread.

>Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the impression that Cousins
>believe all humans have a "beast within," and that the beast is
>something to celebrate.
I would have to say that this may be correct on some levels, but is
off the mark for me. When I look at LaCroix, I don't see a vampire
who celebrates the beast within, rather I see a vampire who accepts
his nature (beast and all). For me, LaCroix represents the
acceptance of self -- the acknowledgement that there are multiple
facets to an individual and those are what make him/her different
and special. He is strong, confident and self-aware. I find these
rather admirable traits. LaCroix is not evil. He is not good. He
is simply LaCroix and that is, in fact, all he should be.

In contrast, Nick reacts against his nature and by doing so creates
self-hatred. He can never hope to attain happiness with himself or
with Natalie while he continues to reject the vampire part of
himself. LaCroix said it best in BMV, when he tells Natalie that
the vampire in Nick might be the part of him that she adores most.
It is the hatred of the vampire that has created the Nick that
Natalie knows. If the challenge to be human were gone, IMO Nick
would change so significantly that Natalie would no longer even
know Nick. Technically, it is the beast within Nick that attracts
her. Would she be willing to put up with so much angsty garbage
from a normal man? Whether or not one views Nick's quest for
humanity as a good thing, by rejecting the *beast* portion of
himself instead of attempting to accept it as part and parcel of
who he is and learn to live with it, he reveals himself to be, IMO,
a relatively, weak character.

There were those women from the first season episode, "If Looks

consider them half vampire. They were given injections of vampire
blood in order to stay young, but didn't seem to have any of the
blood lust or powers of full vampires. They were, of course,
slightly psychotic, violent, and tightly wound when kept from
they're daily dosage of vampire blood.

My thoughts exactly. Nick wants to "repay society for his sins." Dosen't he
realize that he can do so much more good for the human race as a vampire than
he ever could as a human??? If all cops were vampires we'd have a hell of a
low crime rate dont you think? Nick just dosen't realize that vampires can
be good and at the same time true to their nature.
I think Nick would tire of mortality rather quickly. Sure, he'd do fun
"human" things, but after awhile he would miss the excitement of being a
vampire. Uncle would make sure of it.
As for Nick and Nat....I like Nat, I like Nick, I do not like Nick and Nat
together. After 3 years they have become tiresome. There were more sparks
flying between LC/Nat in BMV in that ONE scene (restaurant), then there have
been between Nick and Nat for 3 years!!!! I was hoping LC would just throw
her down on the table, the poor woman needs a little...well, you know. Nick
has had his share of great licking scenes but none of them with Nat. He's

I promised I would post something about Vidcon. So this is it.

There were zines, zines, and more zines. There were zines from shows that I
never even heard of. So I came, I saw, I bought(and bought, and bought).

They had some good panels ranging from Voyager - that ended up being a
discussion on Trek in general to a Writers' Workshop.

They also had a panel on Forever Knight. Flyers were put out and a number
of people took more than 1. We sat around and talked about the show in
general, and how people felt about the changes, and possible cancellation of
the series. Surprisingly alot present knew of the show from its 3rd
season. Differences between the Canadian and American 1st seasons were
discussed.

The panels were presented in the con suit. The setup of people sitting
around on couches and chairs rather than a room with seats lined up in front
of a table with moderators made for a very open and comfortable atmosphere.

Well I'm not to good at writing these kind of things so I'll shut up now.

Sachs wrote:

Certainly, if we're speaking strictly of Darwinian concepts of natural
selection. As I explained to someone else, I am an anthropologist -- I know
about evolution. (They make us take a test on it before we can go dig in the
dirt. ;) ) However, if you want to get really nitpicky, evolution can happen
in *one* generation: Consider the white moths that one year, when polution
turned the trees black, gave birth to a generation of black moths. Could we
then not consider one's previous life as a human one generation, and then
one's rebirth as a vampire the second generation? After all, one of the
fundmental precepts of evolution is *mutation* -- human cells mutated into
vampire cells.

But besides the evolution you hear about on PBS, consider the kind you also
hear about in creative writing classes: *character evolution*. Your
character goes through some sort of transformation and is irrevocably
changed. It's a more metaphysical evolution. I myself have gone through
spiritual evolution since my adolescence -- haven't many of us? It didn't
take generations; it took a few years.

In every since of the word "evolution" I think FK vampires can be considered
evolved humans (well maybe Carouches are de-evolved, yes?). Now, I didn't
necessarily say all evolution is good -- some creatures evolve and then their
surroundings change and they die.

How can I say vampires are an evolutionary step above humans? (Note, I am
talking about FK vampires -- the vampires in my novel are an entirely
different species.) They are stronger, they live longer, and they are
potentially smarter (because a longer life affords the opportunity to learn
more). I'd say if you put a human and a vampire in the same room, only one
of them is going to walk out alive when it comes down to "survival of the
fittest"!

In closing, I'd like to say that, as an anthropologist, I feel compelled to
say that vampires aren't better or worse than humans, they're just different
from us. However, as a *Cousin*, I'd say Heck, yeah they're better -- and
some of them dress better, too! ;) C'mon, Cousins, back me up here! ;)

:redemption. He believes that mortality is a necessary ingredient toward
:redemption; but if he could be 'redeemed' without losing his powers or his

I heartily agree with this one. He said it outright in Blackwing when Nat
was giving him a bad time about "drycleaning his soul". She said he was
still a vampire. He said that even though he was a vampire, he didn't feel
like one "and maybe that's enough".

If I were Nat at that point, I think I would have sat down and had a real
heart to heart with him. (Although I think at that point she was feeling a
little left out that Marion had made him feel like he had been redeemed,
and she hadn't had a part in it).

I felt very sorry for Nick when he gave up that "redemption" so that Marion
wouldn't have to be a vampire. I'm a little surprised however that he didn't
try to get Nat's help (or someone's help) on the aspect that Jess was
talking about re: dumping the negatives into an animal, a stream or
something. Surely there are other "medicine men" who were still active and
could help him work on it.

I forgot the new topic. :-)

What would you like to see in the last ep of the 3rd season?

My short list:

*LaCroix* wears a hair extension.
Janette returns, kicks LaCroix out, and takes the Raven back.
LaCroix gets a real job and takes care of Tracy. For good.
Nat does *not* read Nick the riot act.
Vachon shaves, combs his hair, and does *something* with his life.
Nick realizes that Janette is his true love.
Nat finds a really nice guy, falls in love, marries, and has bambinos.
Grace goes to med school.
Schanke is found wandering around with amnesia, gets his memory back, returns
to the loving arms of his family, and returns to the police force, where he
becomes a captain.
Nick decides he likes being a vampire & hates being a cop. He decides to
become a writer and runs away to Paris with Janette.

Discuss.

Subject: Nick & Nat & New Topic

Those of you who have heard all this before can delete now. And yes, I am a
Knightie. :-)

My take on the Nick & Nat situation--they need to learn to communicate, to
actually *say* what they feel about each other, instead of the
edging-around-the-topic-stuff we've seen for 3 seasons. We've seen them
flirting; we've seen them arguing; we've heard intimations; but we've never
seen them actually, honestly, truly, say what their feelings are. I know, I
know, he said "beautiful things" to her in BMV, but *we* don't actually know
what was said.

So do it, I say. Get it out in the open. Now! No more pussyfooting around.
:-) We want to *hear* it!

On whether Nat's a b*tch, I'd say no. She's competent, she's hardworking,
she's a woman making it in a tough profession. She's alone and lonely. And
she's in love with a dead man, which wouldn't make me a really cheerful
person, either. :-) I think she has seemed a bit ... hard? cruel?
unforgiving? this season, especially to people who haven't seen her in the
other 2 seasons--people who haven't seen her fall apart over her brother's
death, or her godchild's death.

I can understand all that, but what really bothers me is her preaching to
Nick about his morals (or lack of morals). Those of us who have watched her
for all 3 seasons have seen her lie, cover up/change evidence, hide causes of
death, and although some of us would probably do the same thing in her
situation, it annoys me that she moralizes to Nick every chance she gets.
He's not perfect--he's often inconsiderate, he's sometimes weak, he's
responsible for hundreds or thousands of deaths, but he's trying to change.
He's making the attempt. He's working at it, no matter how often he
backslides.

So give him a break, Nat. Glass houses, rocks, and all that.

There, I'm done. Got it off my chest. I feel better. :-)

You forgot:

FORMETOO = For all those who want to leave one line answers, usually
requiring that the entire previous message be included, such
as (but not limited to: "me too", "I agree with you", and "LOL".

(Though I have to admit that people on this list are better than other
lists I'm on about snipping material not related to their replies.)

I'm sending TJ the list of stations that Cynthia and I have maintained, so if

Vampire "Knight" isn't immortal

Not even a massive mobilization on the Internet (headquartered in Boston)
will save the syndicated cult TV show "Forever Knight." (optimists! -CL)
But don't tell the 2,000-plus on-line Knight-fever sufferers who have
accessed the Save-ForeverKnight web page to bemoan the demise of the
Fox-TV/ USA Network sci-fi show.
"We're hoping to find the show another home," said Save-ForeverKnight-ite
Cal Montgomery who called to tell us about a letter-writing campaign to
TriStar Television, the "Forever Knight" "Appreciation Week," a Knight fund
raiser for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation and the Knight table at the Arisia
sci-fi convention at the Park Plaza this weekend.
All to save a show that's doomed. (it wouldn't be if you jerks didn't talk
like that! - CL)
"Only a small miracle and a huge change of heart from the people at TriStar
would save the show," said "Forever Knight" executive producer Jim Parriott
(our man Jim! - CL). "But since USA Network canceled the show, TriStar
would be on the hook for an additional $250,000 per episode (but it's worth
it, innit? - CL) and they're not willing to pay."
Parriott said he surfs the 'net and has seen the mobilization of the troops
who want the drama about the vampire police detective in Toronto back for
another season.
"It's flattering," he said, "but I doubt it's going to help."
File Under: Good Knight.

... well! Somebody's glass is half empty!

By the way, has anyone else noticed that the majority of vampire stuff is
set in Toronto? First I noticed FK, then those Tanya Huff books, then
*Kiss of the Vampire* by Nancy Baker (did anyone else read this? I'd be
interested in some popular opinion), now these *Vampire: the Masquerade*
books! Does anyone know where those "Anita something: Vampire Hunter"
books are set?

Be seeing you
'cos I ... love ... Forever ... Knight...

Aw, shucks. <blush> Still looking for more addenda or amendments,
though....

The "beast within" list would make an interesting addendum to the Factions
FAQ. "Peg that faction in one line or less!" I'm not sure the list is
what Cassie had in mind when she made her request, though!

> I have a definition; just need a faction to go with it... suggestions?

> "The beast within is warm and fuzzy!"

Let's see, this would be the faction of the warm fuzzies. The people who
are fans of the colorful, excruciatingly adorable, portable hugs
available both on the 'net and in Real Life (if Jamie *really* likes you...).
The leader of this faction would have to be Jamie MR herself. ("I *made*
you!" "What you made was a *fuzzy*!")

Let's call 'em:

Fuzz-busters?
The Fuzzy Brigade?
FuzzPackers? (I know, the "Packers" thing has been overdone...)
Fuzzy Co-dependents?
The Perpetually Needy?
Fuzzy-Wuzzies?

Oh, good lord, now I need a warm fuzzy. Hang on while I go load up that
page on the web. {{{fuzzzzzz}}}

Sigh. Now I feel better. Warm and contented all over. :)

As any cousin can tell you, it's so much more satisfying to do the dirty
work yourself. Besides, hired help must either be paid or killed, and it
is really _such_ a pain.

What should a Cousin know of honor? That men use it as an excuse to kill
other men so that they can call themselves "civilized"? That to fight
with honor is to commit suicide? One should use every weapon that one
has and take every opportunity. Honor? Horsefeathers!

What is noise to one person is music to another. How truly boring it
would be if we all were the same. So I wonder if you could describe "noise"
without stepping on anyone's toes. Statistically speaking, probably not.
Although I don't care for a some of the discussions here, I'm sure that
those participating in them do and if they are within the guidelines of
the list rules then as you pointed out, thats whet the delete button is
there for.

In reference to your comment about newspapers and stupid contests, I am
surprised that someone who is into statistics would not see the value of
contests. You might think I took that personally, but I didn't,it just
surprised me. Why else do we have the lottery, Publishers Clearing House
and countless other contests in the advertising world?

Finally, I hope that you all remember that without the efforts of the
SOS/FOFK people that there would be no "Forever Knight" and as much as we all
may say that we will all still be here, I think realistically that this
list will not be as strong as it is now. And I seriously hope that *all*
of you who say that you are a fan of FK and of this list are not sitting
back hoping that the rest of us will save it for you. And please don't
let anyone be mislead into thinking that those who are writing letters
etc are doing it because they haven't anything better to do. When the
demographics were done on this list it was found that the majority are in
fact working professionals or college students, both of which require a
great deal of time in our "real" lives.

Disregarding the religious argument for a moment --- if I _had_ to make
the choice, I would rather have LC (or the vampire of your choice) look
me in the eye, tell me I was going to die and drain my blood as I
swooned into death than a farmer clonk me over the head with a mallet
and roast my flesh. Yes, I'm serious. Which is more the act of a
'wild beast,' really?

Lisa, didn't want to clog the line but I think what you said makes
perfect sense, in fact it was very eloquently put. That's what I
love about the list, the fascinating and intelligent discussions that
fly across the screen, what more could a good vampire want
(I have a few ideas...Blood, Vintage 1228 now a perfect drop in
the 1990s).
