Subject: Vampires: Predators or Monsters?
If this lends any weight to the argument in either direction, the original "7
laws" that God (in the Old Testament) demanded of all human beings in Noah's
time "in order to separate them from the animals" included one that required
that "no man rend a limb from a living animal in order to devour it." This
is presumably the granddaddy of all humane law and was formulated toward the
same purpose...eating any animal while it is still alive is regarded as
inhumane and reduces the consumer to the level of any wild beast without
conscience.
This, I believe, is the essence of vampiric evil. Since a vampire feeds on
the living and yet has the form, conscience and sensibilities of a human
being, and had a former existence as a human being, they are in violation of
that basic Judeao/Christian law that reduces them down to sub-human.
It is a natural fact that leopards, crocodiles and mosquitos all regard
human beings as natural prey. For all we know, by evolutionary tradition,
man has always preyed upon himself as a species with no ill effect. But by
Western religious tradition, man preying upon man is Evil. Since we belong
to that long culture, and since it isn't very socially responsible or
practical to go around eating (or drinking) your fellow man without his
consent, Vampires are not socially acceptable within our society. In fact,
since (unlike Nick), they can not and will not control their appetites, they
aren't socially acceptable OUTSIDE of our society either.
This is just one area where we can not afford to be politically correct,
folks. No matter how pretty a leopard is, you can't live with it. It's a
wild animal, and you're on his menu.

Subject: Vampire Hunter D
Gang:
The Japanese anime movie "Vampire Hunter D" is available on video-
cassette from many fine stores, including Blockbuster Video, Border's Book-
store, Sam Goody, and others.
I bought my copy from Blockbuster, and I _did_ have to special order
it. The price is reasonable -- $19.95 plus tax -- and a darn fine flick to
boot.
I agree with Corvia's sentiment that our FK vamps would be in dire
trouble in D showed up. Thankfully, the world of D is thousands of years
in our future, so I don't think we need to worry about it. It does have
a lot of potential for some fan-fic, though <scribbles note to add yet
_another_ crossover idea to the pile already in place>. Moreover, D's a
cartoon, the FK vamps are, to use a term from the film "Casper," --
"fleshies." Immortal fleshies, but fleshies nonetheless. Insofar as films
like "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?" and "Cool World" are concerned, interaction
between 'toons and fleshies are rare.
ObFK pleaa for help: I am the designated construction worker for the Don
Schanke Memorial Web Page. I am looking for the software program "Hot Metal."
I have been told it is downloadable from the Web, but I don't know where to
find it. Can some Web-literate soul out there help me? <hint to our resident

Subject: War 5 request
I've long since deleted the stories from the last War from my account, but
have a request from an off-list friend who I'm trying to "bring across."
I mentioned something to her about the strip poker scene from War 5 and
she'd love to read the War posts on that subject. Did anyone (e.g., the
author(s), or the kidnapping victim) keep a copy, and if so, could you
e-mail them to me off-list? I couldn't find the last war on the FTP site
or the FKFIC-L web page.
It's for a good cause -- this woman is a great fanfic author (from other
genres) who'd be an excellent contributor to FKFIC-L and the next War if I
can get her up to speed. I don't know what faction she'll end up in --
she swears she'd hang out with me and the Knighties but she writes like a
Cousin (lots of torture scenes)!

Cousin Diana just posted a really terrific response to my
(humungous--sorry) "Dark Side of Nick" tome. Her points have sparked yet
another question in my pea brain:
In what ways to the various factions differ philosophically on the notion
of "the beast within" humans? Correct me if I'm wrong, but I get the
impression that Cousins believe all humans have a "beast within," and that
the beast is something to celebrate. But are there other factions who
believe differently--like maybe that humans are inherently good, that "the
beast within" is (I dunno, maybe) a social construction? Or maybe that
"the beast within" is something someone invented so that the State or the
Church, or whatever, is justified in controlling us? Or maybe even that
"the beast within" exists to justify things like war and such? (I'm sure
I've pretty well given away my position on this, eh?) Or are there other
factions, perhaps, that don't really give a flying cow pattie about the
whole subject of "the beast within"? ;-)
Well . . . I'm just sorta curious.

Here here! I am also in a mess trying to get through my last semester of
Nursing School. I will also be able to afford to purchase a dubbing VCR

Subject: LC, Nick, Nat--how tall?
I guess I'm one of these retentive people that needs to know details, but I
want to know how tall LC, Nick, and Nat are supposed to be relative to one
another. Oftener than not, the camera angles in FK end up making Nigel
Bennett look like he went to college on a basketball scholarship. Is he
really that much taller than everyone else? Also, rewatching NiQ, I noticed
that Catherine Disher is wearing these incredibly high heels but is still
noticeably shorter than GWD. Is he extra tall or is she a shortie like me?
Private responses are fine. I appreciate notes from those in the know!
While we're at it, I know we aren't supposed to discuss the actors'
personal situations here, but I think this one is acceptable: how old is
GWD? And was Nick supposed to have been in his early-to-mid-30s when he was
brought across? Just call me a fool for trivia. :-)

Subject: Normal Non-Feature Vampires?
Do you know what I just realized? It is /very/ rare that we see a normal
non-feature vampire around... I know we've seen a few, but, for instance,
in the Raven is seems like 9/10s the vampires there walk around totally
'vamped out' and have lost the human talent of thinking. And in the
flash backs, which Lacroix is colaborating with other vampires, it seems
Lacroix is the only one who can retract his fangs or talk. I was just
thinking how nice it'd be to see some more "normal" vampires... All it
takes a script writer is five minutes to think up something witty for a
vampire to say in the Raven instead of just snarling at Nick as he
passes. Like, "Hey, buddy, wanna go out hunting? Me and my pals were
just going out to grab a snack..." Nick: "Uhhh...no thanks, I've already
eaten tonight." I know, that's corny, but I'm not a writer, am I? =)

As to the quandry quandry:
Nat needs to be needed. *But* she also doesn't seem to like to deal with
living people (that's why, IMO, she deals with corpses instead). So what
better way to mix her two driving character traits but to *be needed by a
nonliving person*? Nick'll always need her. It's a perfect match. Sounds
like one of those self-help relationship books, you know like _Men are
Vampires, Women are Mortals_, like _Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus_?
Or _Women Who Love Men Who Can't Show Their Love_.

We humans have a tendency to anthropomorphize (how's that for a $2 word?)
everything from inanimate objects to animals. My grandmother can't stand to
watch nature programs on PBS where crocodiles kill cute little raccoons --
she thinks they oughtta go to the supermarket and buy slaughtered cow pieces
like we civilized humans do. We look at other animals and try to make our
laws fit their society: My aunt hates that our female dog is submissive to
our male dog. Well, Vixen's just never heard of the ERA, I guess! Animals,
vampires, and humans, IMO, live in three different, albeit interconnected,
realms. Yes, vampires had a former existence as human beings, but in the
grand scale, humans had a former existence as monkeys! (Boy am I gonna catch
h*ll from some people for that one!) I just consider vampirism an
evolutionary step up from humanism. ;)
Tying this to FK: I think the only way a vampire could be considered a
monster was if they *wanted* to live by human rules, but consistently *broke*
those rules. Like Nick! Lacroix doesn't have any pretension about what he
is. If he were strictly human, he'd be considered a sociopath, without a
conscience or regard for society's laws. But he has *strong* instincts for
his own survival and for the survival of his own species (can I talk about
Fever yet?) -- he has a conscience when it comes to other vampires, but not
to humans. Just like most humans won't kill other humans, but we'll kill
cows and call it dinner.

For instance, in my novel (non-FK), vampires have personal Donors who are
willing to give blood to their vampire masters. Is there an arrangement like
this in the FK universe?

Actually, that scene in the PBS version of the Mahabrata were the oldest
brother is shown heaven, and all his enemies are there, and then he asks
to be shown his family (six brothers and their wife) and is led down
towards hell, but falters before entering and decides to meditate out on
the path instead.
Great scene. Read what you want into that ;)

Hmm, let's see, here's my shot at what each faction thinks (feel free to
disagree):
Knighties: The beast within is my fault, and I'm damned for having one.
Cousins: The beast within is good. Or breakfast. Whatever.
(Note: LaCroix serves no one, not even his beast within!)
Ravens/Ravenettes: The beast within tells me I look good in black.
Natpackers: The beast within has a biological explanation; Nick could
get rid of his if he just stopped drinking blood and starved himself
to death.
Vaqueras/os: The beast within is getting my hair all tangled.
FoDs: The beast within is hungry for souvlaki.
Mercs: The beast within demands chocolate or other payment.
Die-Hards: The beast within won't let me choose a favorite.
The factions that believe two characters belong together
(Nick&Natpackers, Immortal Beloveds, Valentines, Proper Pairings,
etc.): The beast within wants these two characters to bite each other.
Mikies (those Miklos followers): The beast within would like a Mai Tai.
Boutonnieres, Vetter-ans, Perkulators (Tracy's faction): My beast is perky!
Reese's Pieces: The beast within is keeping me from getting any water out
of the precinct water cooler.
Cohen-heads: The beast within wants a report on my desk *yesterday*!
Stonetree-ites: The beast within kept me from dodging that bullet.
FOSsiLs: The beast within wants some cat food. *Now*!
Woofpackers (followers of Perry the vampire dog): They chase the beast
within, or squirrels, whichever they see first.
Goldilocks (Urs's faction): What beast? Where? There's a beast here?
Ratpackers: That malencky beast wi'in is a squealah!
Caddy-Lackeys (a new proposed name for fans of the '62 Caddy):

Think of this as an advertisment--
I am looking for someone to write the Janette portion of the "Round-Kitty"
story that will soon appear in Forever Cat Tales. Forever Cat Tales is the
charity zine being put together & sold in order to pay for the leg operation
of a lame kitten named Gozer that I saved off the street last November. The
person who had originally offered to write Janette's story had to,
regretfully, beg off.
You don't have to be a Raven/ette, but it wouldn't hurt. You must be a good
writer with a good understanding of the motivations and personality of our
glorious & much-missed Janette. The premise is that LC has dumped a large
number of kittens on Nick's doorstep, just to drive him crazy. Nick must find
a home for each kitten--your part of the story begins when he gives one to
Janette, with the understanding that she will find it a home. THE KITTEN
CANNOT BE EATEN, THIS ISN'T THAT KIND OF ZINE. How would Janette go about
finding the kitten a home in her own, inimitable way?
The first person to Email to me (NOT TO THIS LIST, to *me* please!) gets the
right to write the story. I will assign you a kitten.
Any takers? C'mon, I know how much you all love Janette!

I'm a professional with an Internet account that I primarily use for
getting ahold of my clients, along with subscribing to a few statistical
consulting newslists. While I'm really into FK (it's our favorite show by
far at home), I'd have to agree with Lisa that the noise to interest ratio
is about 8:1 these days. That is, if you're only interested in getting info
about the save FK campaign.
OTOH, I could say the same thing about 3/4 of the newsgroups I read for
work too. I could really care less about the butts stuff, the FKFIC wars,
or even the factions, but for all the garbage it's worth staying on the
list to hear people talk about half vampires, Nick's "backsliding", and the
quality of the show. Most importantly, I really get into the sense of
community with the fans.
I've though about unsubscribing too, but there's too many fun things about
the list to make me lose complete interest. So, I'd tell this to people
like her:
a) Would you stop reading the newspaper because it ran stupid contests,
or just read what you want?
b) Does your Internet account have a good delete system??? Even with a
tin text reader, you can easily delete mail you don't want to read by
just hitting "D"
c) If like me you'd like to hear what people think about the most recent
episodes, take a look at FKSPOILR-L. It's a lot less
silly and a lot more targeted.
Having said that, I think that three lists are enough, without getting even
more splintered than we already are. Hey folks, there's strength in unity,
and now's not the time to form MORE factions than we have today. I would
like to see the listowners take a little more charge to cut the noise down,
though.

Well, yeah <g> mostly because I as an *individual* have never been, nor
will I ever be, nor could I ever be a monkey. Individual vampires, on the
other hand, *were* homo sapiens at one time in their lives. Now, there are
certain species of fish that change sex as the need arises (though a sex
change doesn't quite qualify as a change in species despite the fact that I
do wonder sometimes . . .).
Also, human beings didn't evolve from extant monkeys. Humans and monkeys
both evolved from a common ancestor a long, long, long time ago.
ObFK: Now that I've given you a quick and dirty lesson in evolution,
everyone should go and read Apache's "House Call" stories. They appeared
recently on FKFIC-L, they have absolutly nothing to do with evolution, and
I liked them a lot. :-)

punctuate a thought that is spoken within a character's mind? The

Stephanie, GWD was born (I hope this is correct?) 20 April 1957 (astrologically
he was born when the Sun was at 29 degrees of Aries, but depending on what
time he was born he could be a Taurus.
He was I thought supposed to be in his late 20's when brought across, anyway
he looks easy on the eye at any age.

I did it! I gave blood today for Forever Knight! It was only my second
time.
And for the record, we had a snow storm up here in Halifax, (well,
not major by Eastern US standards now), but we got about six inches.
Because of the weather, I walked the four blocks from my office, uphill
all the way, to the clinic. By the time I got there and they stuck the
needle in my arm, the blood just p*ssed out of my arm, my blood pressure
was up so high! I normally have a hard time getting a full bag pumped!!
The Red Cross up here normally doesn't issue receipts, as in Canada, blood
is donated, not sold. But I asked the nurse for something to verify I was
here, and she gave me something that I will be sending along to Bea. Bea,
I'm assuming you're the one who makes sure TPTB find out I did it for FK,
right?
One other person from the Halifax area showed up with me and I met her
there for the first time, and made a new friend. However, I believe the
weather kept most of the others in today. We'll all try and get together
soon for a letter writing party.

Got the Canadian TV Guide in the mail today. The cover story was about
stars and their real life Valentines and not-so-Valentines. In the
best/worst date category, what did I find:
Geraint Wyn Davies, Forever Knight
WORST: My worst date was at the Battalion Ball at Upper Canada College. My
date fell asleep during dinner. And that was the fun part.
Nice to know we all have days like those. ;-)
BTW, for the curious, Upper Canada College is a private all boys school in
Toronto. It used to be pretty much exclusively upper-class WASP, but
they've relaxed the rules in recent years. Not so far as to take girls, but
someday......

Today, in search of some information (see below) I spoke to the people at
Paragon of Canada. What they said is that basically, the fourth season is
up to Columbia/TriStar, unless a network decides to pick it up. So ... the
key, as I'm sure everyone knows, is in convincing C/T to keep it.
That means (as again, I'm sure everyone knows) that we need to get the
affiliates asking for it. So ...
I'm trying to put together a list of all the stations that are showing FK
and their addresses to put on the CV site so that it's easier for otherwise
reluctant readers to send letters in support of the show. Unfortunately,
Columbia/Tristar considers a list of all their affiliates to be proprietary
information. (Don't ask me, I'm just the messenger.)
So ... figuring we should all stick together, I thought I'd ask everybody
for help. What I'd really appreciate is if everyone could send me a note
with the city and station where they watch the show. If you could include
the address and save me a few hundred phone numbers, I would be REALLY
grateful -- not to mention that it would certainly help the process along.
Any help anyone can provide would be really appreciated right about now...

Tricky subject here, because this is not only going off-topic, but onto a
topic on which it is easier to inadvertently cause inflamed feelings than
any other... but the inherent inconsistencies proven in such "basic laws"
makes them a weak and flawed basis on which to rest any arguments, imo.
When one is by nature prey, it is incredibly easy to rationalize an answer
wherein the predator is inherently "bad". Truth is rarely so simple. It's
entirely possible that the vampiric life-form is the next step in the
evolutionary process -- just as possible that vampires are in fact the
living embodiment of evil -- but until someone comes back from The Great
Beyond with vacation slides and postcards and videotape, any such sweeping
indictments are nothing more than purest conjecture.
And one might do well to remember that there are traditions of faith that
predate the "judeo/christian" ethic by many years, that offer no blanket
condemnation... and that the suggestion that said j/c ethic is in some way
more "right" than these more ancient traditions is one that many of us find
offensive.
Which is why we really do try to avoid these religion-based arguments, even
though the discussion of vampirism virtually begs such debates...
