It's my own personal opinion that we SHOULD NOT allow Laurie to spend $3000
of her money. Do you know why? The $4736.37 I've received in the SOS-FK
PO box has been from 109 people. That's right *only* 109 people. Now I
know that people are still sending their checks in and I've gotten about a
dozen pledges to include on Diane's list that she sent me, but that still
leaves roughly 800 people out there. <waving finger admonishingly> I'm not
suggesting that people mortgage their soul to send something in (maybe
barter it a little <only kidding>), but even a little helps.

The average donation has been $43.45 with a low of $10.00 (no, not just from
one person) to a high of $500.

Many people have sent me e-mail or included a note saying "I promised Diane
x dollars, but included X dollars." To all those people who've sent money
in or pledged, give yourself a pat on the back.

Don Durham replied:

Flight is is also going to be extremely expensive from an energy viewpoint
(sorry, the engineer coming out again). Supporting your weight, propelling
yourself, resisting the drag, etc. I would probably choose something other
that self-powered flight because I did not want to be exhausted when I
arrived. Even if you presume that it takes the same energy to fly as to walk
or run (they cost approximately the same from a caloric viewpoint), then
anything over 50 miles is getting very, very difficult for most
people/vampires. I have friends that run in the 100mi races, they have to eat
prodigous amounts of food before, during and after the race. If it did not
_cost_ anything to fly, then most of the FKV's would fly everywhere -- it's
definitely quicker.

As Zillah pointed out, navigation is also going to be a bit difficult. Most
of the airlines follow the interstate highways when they travel. When you're
several hundred feet in the air all places begin to look alike.

I look upon their ability to fly as more of a matter of expedience, not as
day-to-day feature of their lives.

I have a nagging question: "How the heck did Nick get off the Titanic?"

Subject: FK Merchandise

Hey Gang -

Re FK Merchandise - was anyone at Visions95 in Chicago during Thanksgiving?
(Well, I know some of you were coz we met on the escalator). But there were
several tables selling FK merchandise there. I purchased several really neat
t-shirts that had the FK logo/opening shot on the front with the "He was
brought across....." written on the back. They also had Raven t-shirts with a
picture of the big three on the back and "Come for a Drink Stay for a Bite"
written on them, another shirt with the FK logo on the front and a picture of
Nick on the back, also some wine goblets with the Raven logo and the "Come
For a Drink Stay for a Bite" on them as well. Does anyone know who ran these
tables? I meant to get a card or something from them, but as I was trying to
keep up with a 15 year old female newbie fan (my daughter) sometimes I
couldn't remember to eat. All the talk about the NATPE mugs (boo hiss I'm so
jealous) reminded me of these items.

Also, speaking of Visions-there was a questionnaire (sp) in there regarding
who we'd like to see as guests at Visions as they have been losing attendance
numbers and feel they need to spice it up some. Lo and behold FK was listed
as a possible source of getting guests so we definitely voted for them. They
have a web pag and a phone number so I'll keep bugging them to see if they
couldn't possibly get someone from FK there, not only cast people, but people
like Fred Mollin or James Parriot or Ms. Horvath would be interesting guests
I would think.

Whaddya think?

Subject: To obtain regionalized flyers

In order to spread the word, each of us has to be a resource. By
spreading flyers around our community -- comic stores, gaming stores,
scifi stores, bookstores, colleges and universities, bulletin boards,
etc. -- we can spread the word to many others.

If you don't have a flyer, there are a number of sources.

You can download one from the Save FK web site.

You can e-mail Susan Garrett at susang@v......., and she will guide
you to an ftp site or send you one.

If you need it by snail mail, or if you want a CUSTOMIZED flyer, for
your area: you can also contact Lana Soward, lgs@i......., and
she will send you one by regular mail. If you know your local
station's address, she will try to customize the flyer to add that
address. If you know only your station, she will try to locate the
address and customize the flyer with that information. The flyer will
suggest that, in addition to writing to TriStar and USA, people write
to their local affiliate and thank them for carrying FK and urge that
they continue to do so in future.

Writing to the syndies is really important, and so far, I don't think
most of our flyers have contained targeted local information. It's good
that folks are finding our flyers and writing in to TriStar and USA,
but we want them to write to their local stations as well. Hopefully,
we can begin to do that.

Thanks once again to you all for making this work!

Well, he can't drown or freeze and unless a shark bit his head off, sharks
couldn't do him any permanent damage. My guess is that he either
managed to swim to one of the life boats that did get off -- I don't
think even the most heavily loaded was anything like full -- or was
picked up by one of the rescue ships next morning.

Yes, I know that historically only dead bodies were picked up and I
don't think anyone actually swam to one of the boats. But then, historically,
there wasn't a vampire who needed to get off, now, was there? :)

Maybe he even "influenced" the Captain or someone to head in the
direction of the disaster too. :) He would have had to find shelter
before morning. He would have fried in an open boat or the ocean.

Dear Forever Knight fans:

Some of you know me and some of you don't. Some of you have known me for
years. For that reason, I will explain that I am no longer subscribed to the
FK lists right now because my mother had a heart attack, bypass surgery, and
a subsequent stroke. Right now, she cannot speak or move her right side. This
happened on January 5th and has been ongoing since then. The reason I am
writing to the list is that I keep getting added to e-mail loops. It has
happened three times now. PLEASE do not add me to any e-mail loops. I do not
have the time or inclination to read lots of mail right now. I do care about
Forever Knight and I hope it gets renewed, but it just isn't top of my list
at the moment, and I'm sure most of you understand that. Besides, a very kind
member of this list (the same person who fronted so much money) has been
keeping me up-to-date all along and has sent me any really important news
(which I appreciate greatly!). I also have several friends who have kept me
(verbally) up-to-date, as well. So, please, don't add me to any more e-mail
loops without my direction permission. Thank you so much.

chapter in my film textbook on flashback use in Citizen Kane and Rashomon.
A bunch of students were going up and down the stair at that time, and I

'Course I looked up, but by that time they were out the door.

How common is that name? Were they fans? I wish I knew.

However... Ithaca has two greek restaurants (at least), the Greek House

To that end, could someone publish the address to send contributions? Maybe
post it periodically as a reminder? Because I have lost the address and
would like to have it; maybe other people would, too. In addition, I missed
the part about getting a NATPE bag. Where?

I, too, am having a tremendous amount of trouble keeping up with Forever

In other words, they can sell you fanzines (like I can) or t-shirts, but we

Only one of the lifeboats was full. Two or three others were close to full
but could have held more. However, most of the lifeboats got as far away
from the ship as they could upon launch to avoid being sucked under when
the ship foundered. Very few were willing to return after the Titanic went
under for fear of being swamped by desperate survivors. Only one lifeboat
that I know of returned for survivors. It was captained, if you will, by a
low-ranking officer of the Titanic who put all the passengers of his
lifeboat off on another lifeboat and then rowed back. By the time he got
there, almost everyone had either drowned, frozen, or died of injuries
inflicted by the fourth smokestack, which collapsed onto escaping
passengers. Grim, huh? Of course, there was no moon and it was dreadfully
dark (one reason they didn't see the iceberg until it was too late), so
Nick could have just flown off the Titanic and slipped into the back of a
lifeboat without attracting much attention.

>Yes, I know that historically only dead bodies were picked up and I
>don't think anyone actually swam to one of the boats. But then, historically,
>there wasn't a vampire who needed to get off, now, was there? :)

Actually, a few men were able to swim to one of the two collapsible
lifeboats, which was knocked off the deck before the crew could launch it.
The men clung to the overturned craft for the four or so hours it took the
Carpathia (the first rescue ship) to arrive. Two or three of them just
slipped away and died during the night. I think eight or ten men survived
in this fashion.

I had wondered about how Nick escaped myself, and I assumed he had flown.
But it took the ships that went back for bodies well over a day sailing at
20 knots to get from New York City to the reported sinking site. Unless
Nick can fly *really* fast, he'd have gotten roasted by the sun, as Sandra
Gray pointed out. It had occurred to me that maybe he just played dead and
then sneaked out of the morgue at an opportune moment (a la Vachon in BB
I). But none of the first rescue ships picked up bodies, just survivors.
The White Star line sent other ships back to do the dirty cleanup work--and
they buried most of the victims at sea, so Nick would have been right back
where he started from!

The only conclusion I can make here is that vampires don't always fly like
Superman flies, which is to say taking off at point A, moving steadily
along a course at a certain speed, and arriving at point B. (Of course, if
you believe the first Superman movie, he can fly faster than the earth
turns, appox. 17,000 mph, and if he can do it, why can't our FK vamps?)
Perhaps sometimes a vampire's movement from point A to point B is more of a
tesseract (who has read "A Wrinkle in Time?"). Briefly, the tesseract is
moving oneself into the fifth dimension (the fourth dimension being time)
and instead of moving oneself between two points over time, moving the two
points together, bypassing time altogether. Maybe our vampires' access to
this fifth dimension helps to explain their remarkable longevity. Then
again, maybe I just read too much. :-)

If there is a Librarians' faction, no one has told me about it and
I've been both a librarian and on the list since the beginning. Maybe
the confusion is with Dorian the Archivist -- to the Enforcers -- who
is a character from Susan Garrett's fanfic.

Would someone please enlighten me as to the story of Fleur? I know she was
Nick's mortal sister and that LaCroix loved her. But I know there's
more--some kind of pact with LaCroix--and that it affects Nick's
relationships with women. Did she die? Was she killed? You can reply by
private mail, and I'd love to get LOTS of perspectives, so don't hesitate
to offer yours! Thanks in advance.

I need an idea--what kind of antique would you say would be apt for Nick to
have found over his 800-year existence that he would sell to an antique
store? What kind of object would be one around which a curse could revolve?

It's for future fanfic, so if you have any ideas, let me know...

If anyone wants to email me with local information for their area - ie local
station address, phone number, etc. I can customize a flyer and either
email it back to you or snailmail it. I've also done up a totally ascii
text based one if anyone would like that instead. A gif version is
available on Jamie's Save FK webpage, but it doesn't contain local info.
It's real easy for me to change.

If you want one let me know, just put something like FKFLYER in the heading.

Keep up the good work everybody,

Hey, I'll take it! :) Interesting to find out that this was only in the
Canadian version. I only have the Canadian versions and haven't seen the
U.S. versions, so I had no way of knowing. And okay, so you can't see all
that much, but you can still see *something*. That's all I want. :)

I had the same thing with Highlander - down here in S.A. we got the Euro
versions, and so I got used to the episodes that way. I'd quote from an
episode and people would tell me that "Duncan never said that!" But anyway,
I was wondering, for those who saw the Canadian versions of FK first, how
does seeing that version first colour your interpretation of the episodes?

we're talking about! :)

Yes, the guy on DS was indeed Spark. I noticed it last summer when I
was watching that ep of DS. I checked the credits for against AMPH, and
it was him. His name is Rod Wilson. Actually, I think DS is a refuge
for vampires...hmmm maybe Janette will show up there, too. In fact,
I think it would be a lot of fun to have Nick, Frasier and Ray together
in an ep. Now that would be real interesting!

> I have a nagging question: "How the heck did Nick get off the Titanic?"

I've wondered this, too. I figured on one of several possibilities:

     (1) He waited until the last possible minute, then flew off the
ship. Those being rescued probably didn't notice, thanking their lucky
stars or what have you, and those who drowned certainly didn't notice.
     (2) He walked on the ocean floor. Okay, okay, it's probably a
stretch. We've seen that vampires breathe, but do we have evidence that
they *must* breathe? It's possible for this explanation, too, that he
swam during the night and submerged for the day. Got me.
     (3) He "foop"ed (I still love that word) so well that he hydroplaned
all the way over to some coastline. (Now *that's* a stretch.)

Of course, there are some intriguing possibilities afforded by
number two. Did he go down with the ship? All the way down? What is it
like getting off a ship that is totally submerged, split in half, with
drowned corpses floating about in odd directions? Brr. I think I'll
have to write about that one. What was the name of the woman who gave
Nick the Black Buddha again? Can anyone give me her lines and Nick's
during the flashback? I'd appreciate it.
