I thought, "I'm BLIND!!" But then I realized (a) Someone has already used this joke from "Father Figure" once this week on the list, and (b) Other than my computer screen, everything in my room was still clearly visible. (Wow, look, there are other things in my room besides the computer!) I was forced to conclude that my monitor had died. I had to set myself to digest since I don't know how often I'll be able to check my mail now. Of course, I'd walk 10 miles uphill both ways in snow 5 feet deep in the heat of the summer to read the mail from you guys <hug>, but I may be a bit slow in sending replies for a few days until the monitor problem is solved. Anyway, light a candle for my old monitor. Maybe the guy at the computer repair shop can bring it back to life. Lisa McDavid says: >ship. In the one instance I recall where they seemed to have a >long or uncertain distance to go, Hunters in the first season, >Nick, LaCroix and Janette rode horses rather than fly. True, Maybe they just didn't want to pay the money for a flying scene that long, or with multiple points of view (Nick, Janette, and LaCroix)? <G> I dunno, seems to me like it would be kind of tough to have a scene any other way with vampires being *chased* by "Hunters", which is, after all, the title of said episode. They needed a backstory to correspond to the Schanke-gets-stalked front story. I don't think they wanted a scene with the three of them getting chased in flight by three huge Enforcers with accompanying voice-overs to get the point across. I don't care for science fiction and almost never read it, so I can't speak from that point of view. I already brought up the issue of "where have the instances been that Nat has shown any kind of proof for her theory?" a while back, and got some extremely interesting answers back. I enjoyed this discussion greatly (Thanks to all who responded; I'm much smarter about the scientific side than I was), but I'm afraid it didn't change my mind. I do not believe in the existence of a "vampire virus". I personally don't think there's very much scientific involved in vampirism. Or psychic, for that matter. In other areas, of course there is, but not as it relates to vampires. If it were, I really think there *would* be vampires out there roaming around in our world today. There would be no reason for there not to be. Actual vampires, not the humans with the weird thing who think they need to drink blood. We've mentioned them already <G>. Sorry to say, I've never met anyone whom I thought could even remotely be a vampire. (If I did, brother! I'd be brought across like a shot! <G>) Believe it or not, it is *more* difficult for me to believe, and less easy to attribute it to biochemical or psychic means, than the other option. Quite a few of us on this list, though of course not all, believe in some form of god whom we can neither see nor touch. That doesn't stop us from believing (s)he is there. I, at least, have not yet felt the need to create a "god virus" or a "psychic powers" theory to explain my beliefs. I'm sorry if I give offense, I'm not trying to do anything other than play defense. Firstly, how is it that telekinetic powers could cause all of the people affected to behave in *the same exact manner*, about any number of things that they should, by all rights, have no mutual knowledge of? Why do they shrink from religious objects, garlic, and sharp stakes? The "collective unconsciousness" theory is one thing; but why would all the vampires believe in the basic tenets of vampirism (blood drinking, flight, mesmerising victims, fear of religious objects, and so forth), be they in Prague, Miami, Timbuktu, or Takamatsu? Have they all been deluded by a grand conspiracy of LaCroix and his peers? We know that LC can call to Nick over *at least* short distances. We know that Janette and Nick "felt" LC getting closer in "Killer Instinct"; Janette said she had felt it for "a long time", no? How did they all know to practice this ability to call to each other from across time and space? How did they even know they *had* this ability? Are those psychic powers capable of being transmitted "genetically" or through the ingestion of human blood? If not, where did all the vampires get it from? And speaking of genetics, if vampirism is a virus, is it also a virus which renders the vampires sterile? Why can't they have children? As for the hypnosis theories, do masters, like LaCroix, use _hypnosis_ to teach their fledglings to fly? "I say you can fly, Nicholas; therefore you can"? If so, who the heck taught LaCroix this skill? Divia? Where did *she* learn this from? Where did the first "recorded" vampire learn it? Is hypnotic power supposed to be a characteristic of a virus as well? It seems a little more "mystical" than that. Does anyone really know what makes hypnosis work? Surely the human brain is not that easily explained to us. Besides, I *was* assuming that LC has come from far distances while tracking down Nick. *By flight.* I didn't think he just sailed over on a boat and then set up residence wherever Nick lived; we don't have any proof that he didn't fly on his own steam over the Atlantic Ocean or however far it was to get to him. We only see him arriving and leaving. We don't see where LC goes in-between. Again, 'twould be expensive and time-consuming, as well as not necessary to the plot. If not, and they only fly for short distances, and the powers *are* mental, how is the power of flight "extended" to keep so-and-so from losing their mental concentration and crashing to the ground? If Nick gets distracted by a crime in progress, it doesn't seem to shoot his brainwave patterns so far to heck that he falters or falls to the ground. LC keeps taunting Nick in "Dark Knight" with "you're _weak_"--- from drinking animal blood instead of human. Why would that affect *mental* powers? What difference would it really make to Nick's *psychic* strength re: fighting and flying, etc. if he drinks human blood or bovine blood? What's the mystique about drinking human blood per se, if vampirism can be explained so easily by biochemical/psychic means? Vampires have been seen as a supernatural myth for over eight centuries, give or take a few decades. This scientific/psychic idea is a mere toddler, by comparison. Sure, so we didn't have the technology back then to know. But not everything can be explained away by so-called "logical" means. "There are more things in heaven and earth, Horatio" *works both ways*, for the mystic as well as the scientist. I'm well aware of that. However, if the symptoms of vampirism are related to a virus, why the heck hasn't someone noticed this by now? Why don't we ever see Nat reading scientific journals, or discussing this with other scientists, if it's such a possible scientific theory? She doesn't have to say, "Hey Doctor So-and-So, I know this guy who thinks he's a vampire"; she can just say "What do you think of <blank>, do you think they exhibit characteristics that could be attributed to the legendary vampires?" And what in heaven's name is that vampire virus doing, swimmin' away out from under Nat's microscope of its own accord? <VBG> (Is it a virus that feels fear?) We're talking about a TV show. FK has not set up the issue in any way so that the "physiological", or "psychic", or "mystic" group, can win out over the other. There is no way, IMO, that they could just do a 180 and definitively say, "Vampirism is supernatural", or "Vampirism is mental" or "Vampirism is biochemical". They'd look like fools trying to do so. I find myself very unwilling to believe that they at Paragon need a "bible" to be told that they flip-flop all over the place and are going to need to come up with some explanation which will please both sides of the fence. I think JP is out to entertain; I don't think he's out to embellish on the "Dark Shadows" scientific Julia-Barnabas thingy, or create any kind of new statement about vampirism. I could easily be wrong. <G> And we don't know, either way. The only thing I know, is that I've read all the theories so far since I joined the list carefully, and none of them have convinced me yet. I have read enough by now to know that I can't convince the other side either. I'm obviously ill-equipped to deal with both science-fiction and scientists' theories at the same time <VBG>. Lit and English is my bailiwick, not science. Rereading this, it occurs to me that what it looks like, is that I'm saying in effect, "Well, I don't believe this just because it's 'always been done' *this* way before": Well, in a way, I guess I am: Last time we brought this up, someone already said something like, "Do you find it *more* believable that a 'vampire' can just sink their fangs into someone's jugular and have them also become a vampire?" Since I have a firm belief in the possibility of the existence of the supernatural and a lot of things otherworldly, *including* angels and demons (sorry Sharon <G>) --- yes, I must say I honestly do. Until someone shows me a single piece of evidence (just one), I do. I do not believe that there are truly such things as vampires and werewolves; but if I did, I wouldn't think that any of them could be explained away by "scientific" means. Sandra said something to the effect that no, a human couldn't practice levitation and telekinesis to the extent that "a *vampire*" could; but according to the scientific and/or psychic theorems: How do the so-called "vampires" on FK, then, *differ* from merely being "humans with a nasty 'ol virus and/or a heightened psychic consciousness"? But the vampire in question was Jon Feltheimer, or maybe his doppleganger in a universe next door. In any case, the reference was deliberately vague. Answers: Yes and no. Yes, Toronto does have a few "red light districts" - the most notorious is along Jarvis St., south of Bloor St. (the main east-west throughfare) and Dundas St.. One will also "find" similar districts in Parkdale (Queen Street west of Bathurst and east of Roncesvalles), and in Regent Park (the area around Dundas and Parliament), although Parkdale and Regent Park are "downscale" compared to Jarvis. (Downscale is right!! The office where I am currently working, just happens to be around Regent Park, and on Friday, I had the displeasure of having one of those not-particularly charming "ladies" block my entrance into the office parking lot. I ended up finding a different entrance into the lot, but then the damnable hooker actually walked into the lot and started yelling - needless to say, I made a quick exit, then later checked my car for slashed tires :-) ) Still...one of the fringe benefits of my office's location, is that right in front of it, are none other than the Forever Knight paddywagon, and the SWAT truck that is also used by Due South. Anyway...none of this will make much sense unless you have a map of Toronto. Now, as for your next question - no, none of these districts is particularly close to the Raven (whose "real" location is just outside of the central business area, and in the "fashion district", around Queen St. and University Avenue). >Second, is it easy to get to Toronto from Montreal by train, and if it is, is >there easy access to the subway from the train station? (I assume there is >a subway. At least, I have a map for one.) Trains often run between Toronto and Montreal, and the Toronto-bound trains usually end up at Union Station, in the far south (just north of the lakeshore, in fact), between Yonge and Bay Streets, along Front St. From there, you can connect to the Toronto subway system. >That's all for now. Diane Rayno" <LuDia@a.......> Subject: Ger's Conference on OMNI Well, I made it to OMNI and made my own row. 69 of course, I know you wouldn't expect any less of me. Anywho, my row ended up with 6 people in it and we were all basically just paying attention to the wonderful questions that came from the audience, especially Marci's!! The general concensus was that while Ger was trying to be nice and polite, we (my row) felt that he was giving up the run-around. I, personally, felt that he has given up any hope for a 4th season and that he is not too unhappy about it. He blew off a question or two in a roundabout response that did not answer the question posed. I haven't gone through my log of the chat yet, but when I do, I will post the questions that bothered me. The following is not a flame, just constructive criticism: To all who were in 'The Morgue': I realize, and I hope you all do too, that all opinions expressed by me in this post and any others are mine and mine alone. I am entitled to my opinions as is everyone else. If my opinions happen to differ than the majority, than so be it. But I do not like being jumped upon by others because of my differential opinions. If you disagree with me, talk to me, I am always happy to discuss just about anything. Please don't tell me that my opinions are wrong, how do you know that you are so right?. Like I said, they are my opinions and I am entitled to them as are all of you. I do heartily encourage discussion of various opinions, that's what is so wonderful about being on a list with such a wide variety of interesting people. Comments? Flames? Send them to me, not the list. Best Regards, LuDia - The Multi Studded One Cousin@Heart, Immortal Beloved Vamp@Nyte, and now..... Imo, it is incredibly stupid of the poster to think that we did not *know*, thereby, that she had signed on to the list, most likely, *just* to post said tripe. If scurrilous gossip is the only reason she signed on, I agree; why should we have any qualms about kicking her off for good? I, too, would like to say "We're dreadfully sorry" to Mr. Bennett. Mr. Bennett, we intended that you would return from your list hiatus to read dozens of daring accounts of the exploits and feats we have recently performed for the sake of the cast and crew of FK, and be honored and pleased by said gestures. *Not* the unfortunate aberration that occurred. Please accept our apologies. Felicia Bollin AriCon@a.......
