Flipping through the Globe and Mail's entertainment section this morning, I discovered the list of nominees for the Gemini awards for 1996. (These are for canadian television). Geraint has been nominated for Best Leading Actor in an Ongoing Series (unfortunately, he's up against both guys from Due South), and Catherine for Best Leading Actress in an Ongoing Series. (Highlander has also been nominated for best hour-long drama, but it's up against the much-beloved Road To Avonlea, so there's not much hope there.) Good luck, guys! For example: And look! Here they are. In view of generating discussion related to things other than the SOS efforts, which though paramount, are not all emcompassing). Since Sandra was good enough to list them so succinctly, I'll just answer the same way or I am likely to hare off in all sorts of directions. Needless to say it's all IMO.... > Is FK vampirism scientific or supernatural in nature (or a > combination of the two)? After all we've seen, I'd vote for a combination. I know they haven't found a cure but the various things that Nat and/or Nick do from time to time have a definite effect on how strong the "virus" (if that's what it is) is at any given time. Also, there have been a couple of instances where Nat describes seeing a "dna strand" or something that doesn't belong there but which disappears in samples to quickly or something like that. So there is a physical something *there* Then , having said that and made a case for a "virus" or scientific cause, you have to explain that fact that, Nick can *fly*. You could *almost explain everything else away somehow but there he'd be, flying away and all your logic goes to h*ll. Flying is not symptomatic of anything I can think of :-))))))) > Is LC just amoral or evil? ;) Well, if your definition of amoral is "neither moral or immoral; being outside or beyond the moral order or a a particular code of morals" (which is Webster's) then I'd say amoral. He has a "code". It's just not one that most of us could live by or with. Evil? Well, I am not sure I'd care to know enough about true evil to be able to define it. Dictionary definitions seem rather weak in this regard. Evil as defined by your average Funk and Wagnalls could be applied to many many things and I think that dilutes the word. <shrug> IMO anyway. > If FK vampirism is scientific (i.e. natural), how can the FK > vampire fly? well exactly. That's why I went with combo. > Who is your favorite character and why? LaCroix. It was inevitable. I have a long LONG history of falling for wicked, well spoken characters. Always happens. I could give a long drawn out analysis of why these characters appeal but I won't...for now. Maybe later :-))) > Why do you love FK? Well, I used to love the fact that there were many different layers to each story. For the most part that is still true though every now and again we get a real howler! It doesn't insult my intelligence as thoroughly as most TV does these days. And it's different. It's not *Friends*. Now, I have nothing against Friends. I watch Friends. But I don't need to see all the other "friends" shows day in and day out. I like a little variety and FK certainly isn't the same old thing. > What is the worst thing a character has done? The best thing? The *worst*? Hmmm...I pass. I'm sure that if I gave it some thought, I could come up with each character doing something truly low but...and as far as *best* - I could probably find a corresponding redeeming action for each. Not an answer? True, but that makes the show three dimensional and makes the question...tricky. Interesting, but tricky. > Does Nick love Nat? Is she the love of his life? I think he'll find that he does. As for being the end all"love of his life", I don't think so. Assuming that Nick doesn't walk into the sun (and there is no reason to suppose that he would take that step) he will go on and one day Nat won't be there (for whatever reason - time has passed, she's found someone she *can be with, or she didn't but too much time has passed and she has passed away). Nick will find love again because I think he needs to. He needs to have someone believe, to love him, because he doesn't. He is filed with doubt, self-loathing, angst etc. > Does LC have homosexual feelings for Nick? I think there is a very sensual aspect of the relationship but I think that the "sensual" or "erotic" is a key part of the vampires connection with each other. For the time being, I'd say it that aspect that we see being played out. How much is due to that fact that it is LC and Nick specifically? <shrug> Don't know. I think two very skilled actors are giving us a lot of latitude in which each of us can see what we want and/or feel comfortable with. > Does Nick love Janette? Yes. It is tangled up with that self loathing again but in a different way. She loves him for what he was, for what he is but he can't live with that. Will she love what he becomes? Who knows? I wonder if he ever thinks of that as he strives towards mortality. She's been through almsot anything you can imagine with him but I don't imagine she'd go through that. > If Nick achieves mortality again, will he like it? I don't know if he'll *like* it but I am fairly sure he won't be able to live with it. Just a gut feeling. No clearly thought out rationale. > Can FK vampires engage in sex? with other vamps, sure. With mortals, sure - but they'll die. Bummer:-)) > How does one become an FK vampire? (let me count the ways ;) ) She's right. There are more ways to become a vampire in the FK universe than there are of catching cold. No wonder there are so many vampire in Toronto. :-)))))) > If FK vampirism is natural, why do the vampires react with fear to religious items? well that another point in the favor of the supernatural that I didn't thing about earlier. And in regards to that, what is it about the "symbols" that causes them to react across the board. I mean, to crosses, menorahs, *and* sacred daggers, regardless of the original religious beliefs of the being that became the vampire? Is it the object itself? I don't think so. I think the object, whatever it might be, is imbued with the beliefs (faiths?) of those who look to it#004##004##004##004##004# for what it represnets. > The appearances of FK actors in other upcoming roles. I dream of a performace of the Pirates of Penzance starring the actors from FK. I don't know why, I just always have. :-))))))))) > Vachon's hair--like it or not? ;) If he'd get it outta his eyes, it would be 100% better. Hey! <vbg> maybe that's why he always looks like a deer caught in the headlights. He's trying to see through all that hair ;-))))) > How did LC survive being staked and burned in Dark Knight (speculation)? I think Nick missed a bit with the stake and LC, faced with the uncoming flames, found the strength (a surge of vamp adrenaline) to pull it out and get away. > That should give some ideas of the wide variety of things that can > be discussed on forkni-l. Hi, Cassie. I'm sorry that someone flamed you for asking questions. We were all new here once, and most people on the list are friendly and polite to newcomers and tolerant of the inevitable problems that will occur out of ignorance. Unfortunately, when you have more than 900 people on a list, there are bound to be exceptions. >My point was that I thought it would >be nice to talk about the show itself--FK, which we all love enough to >bust our buns to save. Obviously, you can discuss anything you want about the first two seasons, and anything about the first 9 episodes of third season, all of which have been rerun, on forkni-l. However, since discussions often overlap, and people tend to relate something from this week's episode to something from an earlier episode, most discussions of FK itself when new episodes are airing tend to be carried on on fkspoilr. For example, when A More Permanent Hell was broadcast last season, Sandra and I got into a huge debate (one of several we've had) over Nick and LaCroix. We carried on for more than a week, with long posts every day, pulling in examples of things that had happened in virtually every episode to make our points. After a week of this, someone pointed out that we weren't even talking about AMPH anymore <g> and the discussion moved (briefly, since everyone including us was tired of it <g>) to forkni-l. A current example is the discussion on fkspoilr of Nick's drinking habits, which pulls in earlier third season eps as well as current ones. When FK is in reruns, or in the offseason, the episodes are discussed on forkni, and spoilr is quiet. That's when we have contests like the Best Worst First Line and the Answering Machine challenge that took place last spring and summer. When, like now, episodes are in first run, almost all FK discussion tends to take place on fkspoilr. Just the way things have shaken out here. >It's just that every day my mailbox is filled with at least 150 list >messages about donating blood, sending letters and care packages, >etc.--which is all very inspiring and makes me happy--but it would be >nice to see some talk about FK itself every once in a while, too. Since the campaign to save FK is in high gear at the moment, it's only natural that it would dominate the discussion on forkni. You can expect this to change, to some extent, right after NATPE (this week) and certainly by late February, early March, when the decision will probably have been made. (Not that attempts to revive FK won't continue, but they'll undoubtedly do so at a slower pace, taking up less bandwith on forkni-l.) Hope this is somewhat helpful to you and to anyone else who is wondering. Nick's congenital foolishness on the whole vamp question has passed to every one of his kids. They're either as whiny as Nick (like Serena) or 'uncontrollable' (ie, Nick can't handle the responsibility) and semi-immediately killed by Papa (Richard, Elizabeth, etc). (I never had to evacuate before.) My only excuse in not giving credit where credit is due is that I did not know. The article in the Herald came about due to the tireless efforts of Cal Montgomery and Rae Montor (both of whom talked at length to the Herald reporter starting early in the week.) Cal (who had never been to a con in her life before, or done anything even remotely like PR work) made the initial contact (at some serious length) with the reporter from the Herald, whom she found by talking the Boston University-owned commercial television station and getting a referral. Rae spoke with the reporter later, and faxed her info. Cal also spoke at length with the Program Manager of the local syndicator, and primed him to call TriStar. Then, at the con, she ran around and did xeroxing and posted notices all over the hotel. She even brought her palmtop computer to make last-minute signs and help, if needed, in letter- writing to TriStar, etc. Rae arranged the existence, titles, and times of the two FK panels with Programming at the convention (and got them listed in the con's daily newsletter), plus put in a great deal of work writing and organizing and typesetting and telephoning for an event which she was prevented from attending. Also, a special mention should go to Lynne Levine for making the Forever Knight party into an "official" event, and finding out what was needed for the panels and also for printing out tons of press releases, and shopping for the party. And Celeste Hotaling for making the flyers and the poster happen (she brought it down from the website, converted through difficult means to printable work), and collecting FK PAF donations with high visibility at the Print Shop in the Art Show.)" -- and she brought down two flyers (making a poster out of one of them). Special mention should also go to Bea Quindlen, who worked with Rae to redesign the survey she had originally posted to the list to make it a fast (and evocative) 20 Questions to Save the Knight, and then she made 750 copies of it and shipped them to the con. (She did this by spending over 6 hours with several friends digging out of 29" of snow so she could go to her office, and thence to UPS!) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 24 Jan 1996 10:59:55 CST From: L'Phantom <jrarmstr@p.......> Subject: Re: An insanely demented thought... > > On Wed, 24 Jan 1996, L'Phantom wrote: > > > ...FK characters recast in the Rocky Horror Picture Show: > > > > The only problem is, I don't know who'd play Rocky. > > > Miklos! > > I *like* it! But no one said anything to me (as far as I recall) about gingerbread vampires! My guess is that it was someone off-list?? If the guilty party *is* on the list and wants to 'fess up, please do! I have quite a list of GOODIES for the next report, coming soon, honest! And as a reminder, use the following address when sending appreciation cards/notes/gifts to the cast and crew: Paragon Entertainment/Forever Knight 119 Spadina Ave., Suite 900 Toronto, Ontario M5V 2L1 Canada E-mail me off-list if you want a list of cast & crew names. If you don't know what to send, pick something fun or perhaps a specialty of your hometown. (C'mon, Texans, send 'em barbeque sauce!) If you're mailing things from outside Canada, avoid fresh fruits or other things that might freak out the customs officials. On the customs form, identify what you're sending and say it's a gift. Also, avoid gifts that seem personal or romantic, since we don't want to freak out the cast & crew either. Make 'em laugh. >From your friendly neighborhood keeper of the GOODIES list -- * Allison Percy, a perky Knightie percy91@w....... * * __o Pedal for Forever Knight & for a worthy charity! * * _`\<,_ Contact me to pledge support or join the ride. Blast. Darn. I will be out of town that weekend. Anyone want to buy a nice, friendly Ravenette with Knightly leanings a laptop and modem. Or lend her one for the weekend. <sob> <boo-hoo> And I even was 10 min early last week and didn't ask for a refund figuring the money spent for Ger and FK was well-spent anyway. <sniff> Oh well. Anyone in the Monterey, CA area; when and where is FK seen down there? Is it on Sat nite? I will be taping at home, but would love to see it real time. When I first joined in >August, I was flung headlong into a detailed and meaningful debate on >"Ger's Butt". (LOL) Yeah, when I joined the main topic of discussion was something about JADFE (of course, at the time I had no idea what that was...). (Too bad I missed the debate on Ger's butt -- I'm serious here, folks.) Hey, does anyone remember a post where someone asked what JADFE meant, and came up with about 5 different possible meanings? It ended up being signed, Just About Dying For Enlightenment, or something like that. It was hysterical, and I accidentally deleted it. If anyone has a copy of that post, please e-mail it to me (102575.114@c.......). My .02 worth: I *love* staying informed on the SOS efforts, and don't want to miss any of that, but I agree that we should take a little time out for some recreational FK talk, too. Would anyone happen to know when USA will be airing Fever? I heard on Tuesday Night Fights yesterday (no I wasn't watching it! I left the tv while recording Strings!) that they will be returning to their original 2 hour format which means 9-11pm PT. The 2 commentators were also saying how they got "hundreds of thousands" of pieces of mail from people discouraged that the 2 hour format was gone. What about the mail we sent, huh?!! I even went wilingly. I am frightned by needles scared to death but hay I figured that it would be worth it. I went throught the whole thing and the lady asked if I was giving for anyone...I said in honor of FK she said who? I said a Vampire show.."oh you can go on now" well I sat in the chair and waited and then I got flash back to what happened last time...I fainted..needles do that to me...well I made it they got that blood out of me till they took the needle out and I saw it..I was history..out...but hay I did it and when I was recovering...they made me stay forever and a day stuffing me full of twinie and choclate things and apple juice I met another FK fan who was just giving blood. She had no idea it was being cancled and I am going to get her the address and she is gong to start writing and calling. The whole experience was worth it. I don't have a reciept so I don't know if you can count it but I thaught I would share.
