Suddenly the mesmerizing, rich tone was broken by a resounding crash as the door to the broadcast booth burst open. "Hands in the air, bloodsucker," Detective Tracy Vetter yelled, waving her weapon at the astounded vampire, "You're under arrest!" "You _must_ be joking." The quiet menace in the tone was enough to make any sane person run for the hills. Tracy stood her ground. LaCroix sighed deeply, as though all the weight of his two thousand years had decended upon him. "You've got me," he admitted sadly. "Very impressive work, detective. I'll go peacefully." And he did. God moved in a mysterious way, if you ask me, in Germany, a country he seemed to content to leave untouched for much of this century, and in a company we hadn't even thought to get an address for. I really do want to do a bike ride from Philly to Toronto, but I'm saving that one for a 4th season renewal. I have resolved, however, to organize some sort of bike ride to Toronto to celebrate the completion of season 3 and to raise more money for the Pediatric AIDS Foundation. You see, in addition to hitting up the listmembers again (pledges now being accepted!) I can hit up the Philly area bike club & my friends & family for donations. Sooo.... Michelle Mark & Don Durham are also cyclists, apparently. Let's get together and organize something! I know it seems cold right now (particularly up in Ontario), but I think it would be nice to do something in the next couple of months while it's timely! (i.e., before they finish shooting season 3 and maybe break down the sets and disperse the cast & crew.) We can also organize something larger this summer (e.g., following Don's suggesting and joining the aptly named Hotter'n Hell Hundred in Texas -- I get sweaty just thinking about a summer ride in Texas), but keep in mind that by then any decisions about 4th season renewals will be made & the whole timeliness thing goes out the window. Maybe Lisa Ryder, who according to her bio is a cyclist, would lend her support to our cause! I'm writing her a fan letter today as a small part of fulfilling my resolution (so far there isn't an official fan club to join, but I have my checkbook ready!). Everyone fantasizes about doing good and getting rich simultaneously. It even occasionally happens. The business project you suggest, revamping the ratings system, might be doable. It doesn't call to my heart, however. I'm a labor lawyer who does appellate litigation of occupational safety and health issues on the worker side, and that *does* call to my heart and it keeps the heat on in my house. > Yes, this world is becoming more and more hostile to the educated, Not nearly as hostile as it is to the uneducated. Based on my experience as a relic of the anti-Vietnam War movement, and on twenty years of legal practice, and writing and publishing poetry in a country where poetry is not much read, I think you can't really show "the world" anything it doesn't want to see. That said, in my view, you're absolutely right -- in fact, there's a poem in my book about the ad for Star Trek VI, "The Battle for Peace Has Begun"-- that says "don't call that my > war <." I believe in the power of fiction, and of metaphor, to alter the universe. But one can't, all of us on this list all put together can't, "show the world." We have to go out, and do, and it's a daily deal. Look at the power of this metaphor we all love. The show we're working on keeping alive uses the metaphor of a mass-murdering vampire for the struggle inside each human being to get to his or her value. I see myself in Nick just as I did in Mr. Spock long ago. It's something as simple as wanting to get life right, and being clueless about it. In my reading of each of those characters, there are plenty of reasons and more than enough pain inside for each of them to just quit and suicide. And instead they each show up and do their jobs and add what they can to the good of existence every day. > Can you imagine what > would happen if the governments of the world one day woke up and > realized that they each could accomplish their goals if they followed > the tactics of the "Friends of Forever Knight?" What do you imagine to be the goals of governments? Countries are rather more like Lacroix than like Nick. Some are like Vachon, a few are like Screed. > Don't waste time fighting the same battle over and over again because > eventually Forever Knight will be cancelled. I hope the above explains why I think this fight is The Good Fight. To quote the listowner, Jaye the Red, "pardon me if I continue to crusade." Trying to build something good, you should excuse the expression, brick by brick.
