Subject: Millions made on carcass of dead TV show.

Dear List,

Yes, there is gold in them there hills of Hollywood, or in this case,
Hollywood and Toronto. And much money to be made on, and I'll say it
again, the carcass of a dead television show (the pun is very much
intended) So many of us are fighting a fight that has been lost before
("Star Trek," "V," "Alien Nation," "Quantum Leap" just to name a very
few) yet in that very fight these warriors are showing all the signs of
brilliance, creativity and entrepreneurship needed to win a war far
bigger than the battle presently being fought.

We all have bemoaned the fact that "our" shows, the ones that are based
on inner conflicts, that explore the deeper realms of the soul, that
go beyond soap opera existence, are taken off the air at the very time
when we really find them. It seems they they are taken off or "altered"
just because we like them.

Sponsors, networks, advertisers are under the delusion that war sells.
Yes, I said war. Just look at the example in front of us. Forever
Knight used to be an examination of two relationship triangles. We
loved it. Then, in order to "gain more audience" the relationship
triangles were shattered and more violence was introduced into the
show. Gone completely were the forces that generated the very elements
we were seeking. What was left was war, violence and what happened
was that the show lost audience.

So, Nielsen ratings go down, and we all know how accurate those are,
and we start fighting for "Forever Knight." But folks, I'm tired of
fighting battle after battle after battle. Letter writing campaigns,
demonstrations, publicity campaigns, charity drives, lotteries (and I
think that one is a hoot and probably the most magically and
spiritually effective ploy to come down the pike in many a decade), web
pages, showing up at NATPE, trying to get another network to buy the
show, all of these things have been done before and done before that
(except the lottery ticket one and not the web page for obvious
reasons.)

What we have to do is to change the system. We have to acknowledge the
fact that as long as shows are rated and are aired on a competitive
basis (fighting a war with each other) then the shows that we want to
watch are always going to be taken off the air. Why? Because the
present system of rating has been designed as a weapon to use in a war
to fight for advertising dollars. Why else would they have scheduled
"Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" directly opposite "Star Trek: Voyager " in
the major market areas. All this accomplished was to get fans angry.

So, to all of you campaigners out there (and believe me, if I ever
planned to run for President of the United States, I would not want you
as my enemies) we have to change our tactics. We have to look at the
big picture. We have to focus on the way things are done in the board
rooms of Madison Avenue (and if you think that a show's life and death
is determined anywhere else then go back and write your letters on your
manual typewriters and send them via pony express.)

Among the more than 800 people on this list and the millions of people
who watch "our" type of shows there have to be a few lawyers,
mathematicians, accountants and budding advertising and network
executives who want to change the world for the better and make a few
million dollars doing it.. Okay guys, let's get to work and do what
Roy and Walt Disney did. Let's build our own empire. Let's build an
empire where fantasy fuels reality, reality fuels fantasy and our types
of shows don't get cancelled.

Right now we have someone among us, Tammy Pond (list name I think) who
has a good grasp of how the Nielsen system works. So, Tammy, how much
money does the Nielsen company bilk from the networks for their ratings
that are totally unreflective of the nations viewing desires? If
someone could design a truly reflective ratings system, those millions
would be theirs. We also have people like Rae Montor, Felicia Bollin,
Apache, Lisa Wolters and (please don't flame me for not adding your
name) these are only a few of the names that I'm daily seeing on this
list. So, guys, are all of you happy organizing a relatively small
effort (and even if you succeed now "Forever Knight" will still be
cancelled next season or the season after that.) You have such amazing
talents and you are wasting them on one television show. You college
and grad students out there, are you going into morning for "Forever
Knight" when you have to be focusing all your energies on figuring out
ways and means to earn a decent living in just a few years (in a world
which is becoming more and more hostile to the well educated, by the
way?)

Yes, this world is becoming more and more hostile to the educated, The
literacy rate is plummeting, the drop out rate is rising and instead of
seeing fiction, science fiction and fantasy on the air and in the
bookstores, we're seeing more "how to" books and "true crime" programs
because people aren't learning it the first time. Fiction, science
fiction and fantasy are the literature of the educated, it's the place
where the educated initiate ideas for making their own creations. It's
the place where money making schemes are born.

So, here it is, plain out. Why don't you really make some money and
figure out a whole new way of rating television shows that would be
more reflective of what really is going on. Why don't you use your
talents to show the world that fiction is more important than war, that
fantasy drives the stuff on which the world is built? Or, is this too
much of a challenge for you? Do you think that all you should ever
hope for is to get a job working for someone else and then complain
how the system doesn't work to help you? I don't know guys. It seems
to me that any group of people who can organize an international
campaign utilizing every form of communication available to the public
(and some not available to the public) in less than 24 hours has beat
out even the U.S's early warning defense strategies. And you guys did
it using the tactics of fiction, of imagination, of seeking cooperation
and peace. (I can't count how many times I've seen the words "be
polite" or "we must show them that we are on their side." You people
are "fighting" a battle of peace, not of war. Can you imagine what
would happen if the governments of the world one day woke up and
realized that they each could accomplish their goals if they followed
the tactics of the "Friends of Forever Knight?"

This is possible. Yes, this impossiblly major task is very possible.
You want proof? The whole science of demographics was practically
unheard of until network and studio executives needed a way to figure
out why Star Trek was such a phenomenon despite rotten ratings.
Millions of dollars were made because fans, you, me and people like us,
turned an entire industry around. "Star Trek" the dream of a weakling
geek (as Gene Roddenberry described himself as a child) actually
changed the world. There are millions which could be made by anybody
who could come up with a way to determine who is watching which shows
and thereby changing the world again.

Just to show you how behind many television companies are, most of the
movie companies have decided that they are going to "drop" the
action/adventure (read high budget shoot'em up destroy everything
around) movies in favor of "relationship" movies (re: Forever Knight -
relationship stories) because they realize that the audience that wants
to watch these types of movies is much bigger than the action/adventure
audience. The movie people seem to be ahead of the television people
in this "discovery," something we, the audiences have known all along.

We have people who know how the rating system presently works. We have
people who know about the television and advertising industry. We also
have hundreds of bright students who will soon be going out into the
world and looking for a way to earn a living. Well, pool your
resources. Revamp the ratings systems. Organize advertisers into
groups which will demand to sponsor shows that are directed towards
people who will want to see advertisements about their products.

(For example: The audiences for Forever Knight are most likely in the
market for cutting edge computer hardware and software, all sorts of
electronic equipment, employment agencies, etc. What if these
manufactures pooled together and demanded to sponsor "Forever Knight"
because their target market watched this show. I know that that's not
the way it works now. What I'm saying is that we have to develop a
system so that it does work that way and make our own fortunes in the
process.)

Don't waste time fighting the same battle over and over again because
eventually Forever Knight will be cancelled. Maybe not now but
definitely soon. And then the next show we like will be taken off the
air because of "ratings," and the next and the next. Let's stop it
now. It's time that we changed the system so that it will be
financially beneficial for TPTB to be respondent to us.

Too right everyone. We need to let our stations know that we want
Forever Knight for the fourth season. I've already sent out a
batch of letters to the syndicators in my area that already carry
the show asking them to continue supporting it this morning and I'm
writing those who don't carry it asking them to pick it up, if at
all possible, this afternoon.

About those resolutions:
In retrospect, and I know it's too late to back out, I'd rather
stand stark naked in the middle of Rockefeller Center belting out
Barry Manilow tunes then have to sit through Campus Cops this
Saturday. But, to that end, I've got the straps ready and I will
be glued to the set on Saturday night watching Campus Cops with pad
and pencil ready to whip up that supportive letter <gag> Of
course, I never did say I'd actually mail it, did I? :)

Subject: The Good News, and the web page

This is the post whose header somehow got scrambled with the last mispost I
made (apparently, when I try to send mail at the same time that the
system's retrieving mail, my computer goes wonky...)

I don't want to amend the web page to show this newest good news until we
are ABSOLUTELY SURE that it's true. Last time I checked and tried to do
the math, we were averaging a hit on that page every five minutes -- and I
would hate to create a false sense of security, until and unless we know
it's justified.

At that time, I would like to amend the web page to reflect our long term
strategy.

What long term strategy? Good question. We have one, I think; we just
haven't fully defined it yet.

Just wanted to let the 'regular' hitters know that the current "FK has been
CANCELLED" announcement is not based on new information, but on old data --
so don't panic!

At any rate... once this news is 'confirmed' enough to be posted on the
page (which I hope we will know before too long!) I will be giving up
smoking.

Until that point, I am sucking in nicotine as fast as my lungs can process
it. I claim this privilege under the divine right of Webgoddesshood (tm).
But y'all feel free to begin YOUR vows; don't wait up for me... <vbeg>

One thing: dead TV shows where the fight was lost.
There is hope. "Homicide"; hiatased serveral times, reported cancelled,
editing toned down and actors lost.

Still there. Still The Best Damn Show on TV (tm).
(Before flaming: on the Homicide group, it was decided that every thing
about Homicide was "The Best Damn ---- on TV" regardless of whether it was
or wasn't. Our little joke. Still one of my favorite shows)

Alien Nation is still alive via the movies (didna like the last one though).

Star Trek is *immensely* popular.

While there is life there is hope; and I believe that there's life in
those dead people yet <g>.

On reforming the industry: a trend in entertainment nowadays is in
specialization. Look at any magazine rack. Look at the junk mail you receive.
However, with expanding costs (didja see the NYTimes article on SONY's
status?), something has to be a huge success to rake up costs. One movie
has to recoup the losses from other films. Hence the emphasis on blockbusters.

As one of those lowly college students, how *exactly* are we supposed to
change the system?
*sigh* actually, you're going to get me started again. First, my ill fated
comics idea, my dead computer game attempt, now you're going to get me
doing ratings at college. Better figure out how to start up a Web page on
AOL. <g>

I think that the post was more of a call to arms than a feasible idea, but
maybe...
I didna think we were going to get the rest of the season (hence the
disection resolution. Actually, I'm afraid I'll like it and go on to
become a doctor. How am I going to find the time to keep up on the list if
I'm a *doctor*, or in med school for that matter?)

Well, OK. I'll see if by my little ratings system I can influence TPTB
elsewhere. Now to plan. Help would be appreciated. (beg beg beg)

Let's see what else this post generates.

This is true.

But part of the reason we're IN this mess is that obviously, someone found
a loophole somewhere that allowed them to pull FK.

Therefore, I am opposed to loopholes, just on general principle.

The point of these vows, I think, was to make a sacrifice to 'the powers',
in a serious or a silly way: a promise that if Thing A occurs, I will do
Thing B. The power of a broken promise is about the most negative form of
energy you can find -- and karmically, is a Very Bad Thing.

<sigh>

I can't avoid this any longer, can I? No, I can't.

All right. I'm quitting. The cigarettes are going bye-bye. Right now.

Because I believe in the power of the kept promise, and the impossible
dream, and the love we have in our hearts for this show and for each other.

Keep the faith.

Subject: Advertising in Electronic Media/NATPE

Hi all. I'm posting this for Laurie Fenster who is off line today due to
real world activities (yes folks, the real world is still out
there...really it is). This is a dynamite idea, and she's being AMAZINGLY
generous to offer to do this, so any suggestions you all might have should
take that into account, okay? Off my soap box now and on to the suggestion:

>From Laurie:
*****************
For those who don't know what's going on, Lillian was able to ascertain
that the cost of a full page ad in Electronic Media for the NATPE issue
is $4,760. Since this must happen by Jan 8, I offered to front the
cost and get reimbursed later as much as possible from voluntary
contributions. In return, I want final approval of the ad as it goes
in.

Just spoke to Celeste. She'll do the camera ready art and vet it by
someone in her office (she works for a pr firm). If someone knows the
size (Lillian), email her; if not, she can probably find out in-house.

What I have in mind for this ad is the FK Appreciation Week theme I've
been playing with: (This isn't text; this is concept):

THE FRIENDS OF FOREVER KNIGHT ANNOUNCE FOREVER KNIGHT APPRECIATION
WEEK!

"In honor of the cast and crew of Forever Knight, the Fans and Friends
of Forever Knight have declared this FK Appreciation Week. The
following events will take place in honor of this remarkable program:

Sat, Jan. 13 - Blood Drive in NYC, DC (DC Dates probably Jan 20)
Weds, Jan. 17 - Delivery to the Pediatric Aids Foundation of charity
Funds raised by the Friends of FK. Contributions received during the
first two weeks of this charity drive have exceeded $_____.
Syndicated Station Appreciation Day - ??? (send letters of gratitude?
watch their programs??)
TriStar Appreciation Day - rent or buy another TS movie!
Telemunchen Appreciation Day ??? (in light of what's happened) (or
combine w/TS?)

We are working on getting an activity in Los Angeles for this week as
well...

[We need other events for the week of Jan 13-Jan 20. we should pick
another day for letter writing; perhaps Sponsor Appreciation Day when
everyone goes out and buys the product of an FK sponsor :-) (Cheap for
us, but effective <g>)]

Look for the Friends of FK at NATPE!

FOREVER KNIGHT IS REMARKABLE PROGRAMMING
ASK TRI-STAR TELEVISION FOR FOREVER KNIGHT FOR YOUR STATION!"

We need to finalize all this by TOMORROW (gulp!) January 5! to get the ad
in by Monday.

YIPPEEYAPPEYYAHOOEY!!!!

(Still beaming!)

        Gang:
I was much pleased to hear that Telemunchen has demanded that season
three be finished out. Even though I now have to carry through on my threat
of quitting smoking, not using the word "B***k" in reference to Nick, and to
be nice to Tracy and her Perkulator. Well -- I guess now that FK has a temp
save in effect, there's more than one Perkulator now. ;)
BTW -- since USA _has_ dropped FK, and FK's remainder is going into
syndication, can someone in the Indiana area tell me where I can see the eps?
Thanks in advance. All replies to my private e-mail address, please.

I understand USA cancelling but can someone clarify the part about
syndicqtion?
Does this mean that they will only finish shooting this season and then
no more show, period? Will it stay in syndication, as long as the local
stations will air it? What about them airing reruns of Seasons 1 & 2?
Back to the same thing before - could another network go in with
TriStar/Columbia, like maybe TNT or TBS or what about Universal Studios or
something like that?

You said that Ger and his family are moving to S. Calif - so then, he
doesn't want to continue in the show, anyway? Or was he planning on
flying back and forth or something? Does anyone know what he plans to do
once he moves?

RE: Help Quick :
I watched the segment last nite on Ch. 12 about internet addicts.. Yes,
he wanted to show the "bad" side of it. He was pointing out that it
caused a divorce in a family and gave a helpline which is actually on the
internet. He did not mention anything about what I told him. I didn't
call the station yesterday because I wanted to wait and see what he said.
So, today when I get home I will call the station and see if they'd be
interested in a positive story. If not them I can try the other stations,
especially channel 15 who airs FK. I'll see what I can do.

Tracy is a good actress and a good cop with badly written lines. If the
writers knew what to do with a character like Tracy, then she would be the
hit of the show, even overtaking Nick and Natalie.

Looks like TV execs and I have the same lousy timing. I'm shifting jobs
over here, so my email address is changing slightly (it would've
anyway, it turns out). Good news is it's even easier to remember.

If you need to find me, direct your mail to ab@purdue.edu. Old
addresses will still work for a while, but I imagine nova will be out
the door shortly after I am (it's a NeXT (of some historical
significance, actually) and no one around here likes those but me :-( ).

I haven't found a home for my mail robots yet, so they probably won't
work for a while. I think the only one you guys use is
FKguide@n........ I'll let you know when I have a new
address (and maybe I'll even upload the newer version from home).

In case anyone's wondering, I'm moving from being a programmer over
here at the Computing Center to being Manager of the Physics
Computer Network. If that sounds like a big promotion, it's 'cause it
is. I'm a bit nervous about it actually, but it should be great.

I guess it's like the Parents' Curse, but instead of "Just you wait
until you have kids of your own!", it's "Just you wait until you have a
computing center of your own!" :-)

then, this would be another good way to make Forever Knight's presence known.

Have heard from an extremely *reliable source* that the rest of third

so it won't be too bad.

Let's keep the pressure up on the sponsors and syndies for fourth
