That was a fantastic letter that brought up many excellent points. I also feel the same way about using the Internet as a tool to measure potential viewership. I think the programming execs should hire someone to cruise the net and survey the different tv lists (mailing lists, newsgroups, related groups, etc.). I think this would show them a much more accurate portrayal of popularity than the obsolete Neilsen ratings. In fact, if our letters each count as 100 potential viewers, then each person that has subscribed to a mailing list, newsgroup, etc. should count as 500 potential viewers (imo), since most people (in the country/world) still don't have Internet access. I would also like to applaud this list in another way (in addition to everyone's wonderful dedication and creativity on the SOS efforts). The people on this list seem to be about the most intelligent, literate group I've ever seen. Everyone always uses excellent grammar and spelling (and believe me, a lot of people don't!), and the ideas generated here have all had merit and shown a lot of creativity (even the ones we decided we couldn't do). Dear Folks, Hello to everyone! The above is the comprehensive e-mail address list that I have been able to put together for the Save Our Show effort for Forever Knight in the DC area. Either Laura Waskey or I have been in touch with you before, in most cases. I have used two account addresses for a couple people; please tell me if I should delete one. I am concerned that the address for Domi (dgrodz@e.......) is an old one; if anyone has a newer address, please forward it. I'd also like to compile a surface address and phone list, if no one minds; so in your confirmation message, would you please include those things? This group needs to get organized more than most, because we have a Big Opportunity: again, as some of you know, Cynthia Hoffman has a pal who is an FK fan at CNN's Headline News. He might be able to give us coverage in the "entertainment" part of their coverage; the publicity value of this is .. well, priceless. (Whereas the publicity price of an ad in USA Today is a minimum of $13,000, for example). DC is one of the four hub cities for this news service. A blood donor drive -- which Marcy (marcy@h.......) suggested and Michelle Marks (Raindance2@a.......) actually has experience doing -- is a very visual event. In addition, Laura Waskey (khhk71A@p.......) who is in this area, has agreed to serve as a national spokesperson for the SOS effort; Leslie Remencus has gen-u-ine oncamera experience with a successful SOS effort for Due South. Michelle has, I believe, already begun tentative contact with the Red Cross to discuss doing this.. time, place etc. The New York people are arranging to do theirs at some kind of vampire/goth bar; is there any such place in this area? (I know the real vampires already work for the govt...) Would we want to try to coordinate with them, even if there is? As some of you already know, a January 13 meeting/party has been set at Laura Waskey's house in Baltimore. We need to coordinate travel if necessary. It's possible that CNN would ask us to act sooner than that. I guess that's a problem for another day. Anyway, this is just to say, to try to get us in touch as a group, and to alert you about the possible blood drive. My instinct would be that it should *definitely* happen before NATPE, maybe ASAP. THE PUBLIC HAS SPOKEN: Fans Of Embattled Show Launch Group Charity Campaign (January 2, 1996 - NORWALK, CT) -- In an unprecedented move, and in an overwhelming show of support for the cast and crew of the syndicated television series, "Forever Knight," fans of the show have tied their attempts to save the show from imminent cancellation to a group charity campaign, with the proceeds going to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, one of the favored charities of the show's leading actor, Geraint Wyn Davies. Sony Pictures Entertainment Group, the corporate giant behind the series, started the charity ball rolling over the holiday season when they invited different stars from Sony shows to select a favorite charity. They offered fans the opportunity to send e-mail "postcards" to their on-line friends and earmarked $10,000 to be divided proportionately among the top recipients. In response to the Sony campaign and the news of the possible cancellation, fans of "Forever Knight" decided to start their own group collection and make a donation to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation in honor of the cast and crew of "Forever Knight." When asked why they had made this move, Lisa Prince, the charity organizer for this effort, said, "We have had several years of wonderful, intelligent, thought-provoking viewing thanks to all the people involved in the making of 'Forever Knight' -- cast and crew alike. This is our way of saying thank you to them for all of their hard work and dedication to the show that we love. Once we saw Mr. Wyn Davies' charity postcard, our course was clear. "Forever Knight" features Geraint Wyn-Davies as the embattled 800-year old vampire Nick Knight, who in his present existence, fights crime in Toronto, Canada. As the show's protagonist, he seeks to atone for sins committed in his centuries as a vampire. Along with co-star Catherine Disher, who plays Dr. Natalie Lambert, he searches for a cure to bring him back from the land of the undead. Adding to the conflict is Lucien LaCroix, Nick's vampire master, played by Nigel Bennett, who seeks control over Nick's eternal soul. ### Cynthia Hoffman choff@v....... THE INTERNET: It's Not Just For Entertainment Anymore (January 2, 1996 -- Berkeley, CA) -- The Internet, the often maligned worldwide network of computer users, has now stepped beyond its usual role as an entertainment provider and is being used to coordinate a worldwide campaign to save the show "Forever Knight." Within hours of hearing of the possible cancellation of the show, members of newsgroups, discussion lists and fiction forums, were mobilizing in an effort to bolster the chances of "Forever Knight's" renewal. Using many different access providers, this diverse group of individuals decided to use their access to the Internet as a positive way of saving their favorite television show. The news of the cancellation of "Forever Knight" began circulating on Friday, December 22, 1995, and by Friday evening, ideas about how to save the show, addresses for whom to write, and various ways to get publicity were being suggested. By Saturday morning, battle lines were drawn and the members of the Internet community were ready for action. Calls for help were sent out to web sites and home pages. People subscribing to newsgroups and bulletin boards that would be sympathetic to the save "Forever Knight" cause were enlisted. By Sunday morning, organizers of many facets of the campaign were in place, and by Christmas Day -- barely four days following the first rumblings of potential trouble -- plans were finalized, courses of action set, letters written and ready to send and foundations laid for involving people outside of the computer community. "In the old days of campaigning of this sort," stated a campaigner, "this type of mobilization would have been unheard of. Now, with instant access through the Internet, large groups of people with a common goal can effect a change in a fraction of the time it used to take." FOREVER KNIGHT The Show That Wouldn't Die Fans of the television show "Forever Knight," a late night program with a devoted following, find themselves hard at work for the third time in five years, trying to keep their favorite show on the air. As always, the odds are long, but "Forever Knight" fans have faced long odds before. And beaten them. This time, they are using the power of the Internet to assist them in their efforts. A grassroots group, The Friends of Forever Knight, has rapidly organized to campaign for the continuation of the program. Within a week of hearing that the program was in jeopardy, The Friends of Forever Knight developed a number of campaign strategies: letters are being written to the program's producers, broadcasters, and sponsors to encourage the continuation of the program; donations are being made in honor of the cast and crew of the show to the Pediatric AIDS Foundation, one of the favorite charities of the show's star, Geraint Wyn Davies; and lottery tickets are being purchased and sent to a number of executives at USA Network along with the slogan "a one in a million chance", with the only request being that either the winning monies be used for continued production of the series, or that the money be donated to charity. Several other strategies are also in various stages of planning and execution, including Blood Drives in both Washington, D.C and New York City. There is also a World Wide Web Page located at http://members.aol.com/CuznJamieMR/SaveForeverKnight.html, which is regularly updated to reflect new courses of action. "Forever Knight," features Geraint Wyn-Davies as the embattled 800-year old vampire Nick Knight, who in his present existence, fights crime in Toronto, Canada. All members of the talented cast have extensive theater backgrounds. ### Cynthia Hoffman choff@v....... Forever Knight is in trouble; get more information at http://members.aol.com/CuznJamiMR/SaveForeverKnight.html ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 14:36:51 -0500 From: "Meredith E. Pickering" <Plan2@a.......> Subject: New England FK fans, RI Party, and other news... Hello all. I thought I'd take a break from writing letters to sponsors and TPTB to ask for some info, volunteer myself, and remind everyone about the upcoming RI FK party. 1) Request for New England Forever Knight fans to kindly de-lurk briefly to let me know who/where you are. There are some pieces of info and campaigns particularly relevant to those in our northeast corner, and I'd like to get a list together: I copied 14 names/addresses from Zillah's Locations List (Thanks, Cuz.), but I KNOW THERE ARE MORE OF YOU. Let's get in touch. Thank you. 2) I have volunteered myself to help with *anything* if other FKers are wearing out/stressing out. Remember that. (Jamie, this means you, too: I'll even drive to NYC this coming weekend to help, if need be...) 3) RI Forever Knight Party! RI Forever Knight Party! RI Forever Knight Party! Hear ye, Hear ye: I am re-announcing the RI/MA/CT (and anyone else who feels like showing up) FK party. It was scheduled for Jan. 13th, and moved to the 20th because of a supposed scheduling change. Well, my local affiliate will be showing a new ep. on the 13th, but in order to keep things *kinda* calm, THE PARTY WILL BE ON SATURDAY the 20th of JANUARY from mid-afternoon till ??? I have floor space. I'm near Providence, RI (central to NY/Boston). I have the blloper reel. I have most 1st & second season tapes. I need someone to bring 3rd season tapes if you want to watch 'em, because my VCR is a &!@#?!*@%? piece of junk... If you want to show up, or think you do, please e-mail me (Plan2@a.......). If you e-mailed me before, I will be getting directions to you tonight or tomorrow... Meredith Natpacker, Nick&Natpacker Believer In Miracles: Save The Knight P.S. Will someone PLEASE e-mail me the recipes for blood/blood lite? ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 2 Jan 1996 14:44:09 -0500 From: zillah <zillah@i.......> Subject: LOCATIONS List - Zillah Warns There will be an danger in relying on any of the "specialized" lists. There is a handful of people who will not appear on the "CANDIAN", "OVER SEAS", and "U.S.A." lists because they gave me no geographical information... not even a country or a state. Until I have that information, these individuals will appear only on the main lists. The specialized lists were inspired by a request made to me... I hope they satisfy. ---------------------------------------------- SOME NOTES ON PAST AND FUTURE LIST ENTRANTS All new entrants are welcome. I want this list to be as complete as it can be, else it fails in function. However, I won't enter anyone who doesn't ask... even if I know you well... and then I will only post that information you send to me. I may scan your signature for information, but if it isn't there somewhere then it isn't going to be on the list. So make sure to BE COMPLETE. Remember, I want a NAME, E-MAIL ADDRESS, FACTION, and some GEOGRAPHIC DETAIL. NAME = Something you wish to be called regularly. An alias will suffice. However, if you don't want your legal name on the list then don't send it to me. If you send me your legal name and an alias then your legal name will appear. The only time an alias will appear with a legal name is if I recognize it as well known. E-MAIL ADDRESS = Where you can be reached electronically. If you don't give me one, then I'll rip it out of the internet header that comes with your post. It's a strange but true fact that sometimes the apparant e-mail address is a routing address assigned by a system's mail gateway. So, remember to provide your e-mail address inside the body of your post. FACTION = Your favorite character affiliation. GEOGRAPHIC DETAIL = Your location. Be as specific or vague as you like, but include it. A state will be sufficient, or a Canadian province. WARNING!!! This is a LOCATIONS list. After a unspecified period ALL entries without GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION included will be DELETED without further notice. As I said, be as vague as you like but the point behind this list is LOCATION and no location means no entry. There will be a brief grace period. ---------------------------------------------- AND ONE MORE THING... Many thanks to everyone who sent the kind words and virtual goodies. I enjoyed them. You guys are the greatest. A great deal of the work done on the list while I watched from my new collection of Forever Knight tapes from the first and second seasons provided to me by JANICE COX ! I have run them continuously since I got them... I'm up to tape five and I can't wait to start over again. Thanks Janice ! === Take It Light === ___________________________________________________________ .Cousin Zillah. .zillah@i........
